Its job: the pocket, the keyring, the coin pocket of a pair of jeans. It is a 1.75 inch blade for opening things, cutting cord, and the hundred small jobs that do not need a big knife.

Care: Dry it and oil it, and pay as much attention to the pivot as to the blade. Water gets trapped inside a folder and stays there. Open it fully, dry the joint, and put a drop of light oil in it every few weeks. It does not belong in the pouch between carries.

FAQs

How small is it really? 3.5 inches overall with a 1.75 inch blade and a 1.75 inch handle. It fits in a closed fist with room left over.

Is the bolster Damascus too? Yes. It is cut from the billet the blade came out of, so the figure carries straight across the front of the knife with no break at the pivot.

Is a small blade legal to carry? Blade length limits and concealment rules are set by state and city, not by us. Check yours in our pocket knife laws by state before you carry it.

What a 1.75 inch blade is for

Short blades get underrated. Most of what a pocket knife actually does in a week is done within an inch and a half of the tip: tape, twine, packaging, a stubborn tag, a splinter. A short blade puts your hand close to the work, which is exactly what you want for those jobs. It is not a camp knife and it does not pretend to be one. Because the blade is short it is also stiff, so it will lift a staple or lever a lid without the flex a longer thin blade would give you. Weight is not the reason to buy a small knife. The reason is that you actually carry it.

The pattern on a small blade

A tight forge pattern shows better on a small blade than a large one because the layers are compressed into less space. You get a dense swirl instead of a lazy band. Every billet is folded by hand, so no two of these come out matching. Our page on real versus fake Damascus shows what to look for if you are checking.

Handle and carry

The scales are pale mottled tooth, pinned with brass, with a brass thumb stud at the pivot and a lanyard hole through the butt. It comes with a tooled leather pouch that snaps shut. If you want the same forge work in something you would take into the field, the Hunter’s Legacy fixed blade is the full-size version.
