Everyday job: the cutting nobody plans for — a tag, a zip tie, a stubborn blister pack, a length of string — carried on a keyring or in a coin pocket.

What a one and a half inch blade can and cannot do

At an inch and a half you have a scalpel, not a tool. It opens packaging, cuts thread, trims a stem and slices an apple. It will not cut rope, break down a box in one pass, or do anything that needs you to push hard, because there is nowhere for four fingers to sit. Treat the size as the feature. Our notes on choosing an everyday carry knife cover the point where small stops being enough.

Two ounces, and why weight decides everything

The knife weighs two ounces closed. That is the entire argument for it. Anything heavier gets left on a shelf, and a small knife that is always with you cuts more in a year than a large one that stays home. It also means the knife is easy to lose. Put it on a keyring.

Small handles and small hands

The scales are two inches long, so an adult holds this between a thumb and two fingers rather than in a fist. People with smaller hands find it comfortable and everyone else finds it fiddly under load. Our guide to picking a knife for smaller hands is the place to start if you are buying this as a gift. The original Tsetse Fly is the same pattern in the standard handle.

Care: This knife lives in a pocket with keys and coins, which is the hardest place to keep carbon steel dry. Wipe the blade after any wet use and once a fortnight even if you have not used it, because pocket lint holds moisture. The pivot wants a trace of oil now and then, because a mechanism this small binds on very little grit. The filed brass on the spine wants a soft brush rather than a cloth.

FAQs

Is it a neck knife or a folder? It folds. It is small enough to hang on a cord if you want, but it is a folding knife with a locking blade, not a fixed blade in a sheath.

Can a blade this small be properly sharpened? Yes, on a small stone or the corner of a full-size one. Short edges are quick to bring back.

Will the green scales fade? The color is through the material rather than painted on, so handling will not wear it off. Long spells in direct sun will lighten it.
