Pocket duty: the small jobs that fill a day — envelopes, packaging tape, fruit at a desk, a loose label — carried in a shirt pocket without dragging it out of shape.

Small on purpose

Six and a half inches closed to two and a half inches of edge is a deliberately modest knife. It slips into a coin pocket, it does not read as threatening on a table, and at three and a half ounces you will forget it is on you. What you give up is leverage. There is no room for a full four-finger grip on the handle when the blade is open, so heavy cutting means squeezing rather than pushing, and your hand will tire long before the edge does.

Who it suits

This is the knife for anyone with smaller hands, anyone who works indoors, and anyone who has decided a big folder is more knife than their life requires. Our guide to choosing a knife for smaller hands covers what to measure. It suits hunters and tradespeople badly. If the size is wrong, the Dugite pocket knife is the same idea with more blade.

Walnut over time

Walnut starts mid-brown with a purple undertone and mellows to a warmer, lighter brown as light works on it. It dents more readily than padauk or wenge, so expect small marks along the edges of the scales. They read as character rather than damage. The grain will raise slightly if the wood gets soaked; a very light sanding and a wipe of oil flattens it again.

Care: Dry the blade and the pivot after any wet job, then leave the knife open for ten minutes before you close it so nothing is trapped inside. Walnut takes a drop of oil twice a year and the carbon blade takes a thin film monthly. Which oil matters less than most people think, but there are a few to avoid — and our knife oil guide names them.

FAQs

Is it too small to be useful? For paper, cord, tape and food, no. For rope, wood or game, yes. Buy it as a second knife if those are your jobs.

Can a small blade take the same edge? It takes the same edge and holds it longer, because a short blade sees less side load.

Does it come with a sheath? Yes, a hand-stitched leather sheath, although most owners carry this one loose in a pocket.

Is it a sensible first knife for a teenager? The proportions suit younger hands, but the edge is as keen as anything else we make and the lock still demands respect. Supervise the first few weeks of it.
