Where it belongs: camp and trail work with the reach for heavy jobs, and a display shelf on the weeks you are not out. The full length blade takes brush, kindling and big game work without complaint.

Care: Dry it before it goes anywhere near the sheath, then oil it once a month. Nine inches of high-carbon Damascus gives moisture a lot of surface to work on, so check the guard and the ricasso, which is where water sits after a wet day.

FAQs

Is the pattern real? Yes. It is pattern-welded 1095 and 15N20, forged to 352 layers and acid-etched so the two steels show against each other. Nothing is printed on.

How big is it? 14 inches overall with a 9 inch blade and a 5 inch handle. It is a two-hand-sized knife, not a pocket knife. Expect to carry it on a belt rather than in a pack, because a blade this long is awkward to reach for once it is buried under gear.

What sheath comes with it? A hand-stitched leather sheath with a snap retention strap and a tooled border, included with the knife. It is cut to fit this blade rather than to a generic pattern, so the retention is tight from the first day.

Reading the rain drop pattern

Rain drop is made by drilling or punching dimples into the billet and then flattening it, which pulls the layers into concentric rings. You can see them pooling along the flat of this blade and stretching where the grind thins toward the edge. Because the billet is worked by hand, the figure is never repeated. Our page on Damascus pattern types shows how each one is made.

The handle stack

Stag antler sits at the front, a band of turquoise breaks it, and a dark wood block finishes the run to a polished steel pommel with a lanyard hole. The guard is a full steel cross guard, which matters on a nine inch blade doing wet work. Stag grips better wet than any polished material and every crown is different, so the handle you receive will not match the photograph exactly. The pommel is drilled for a wrist lanyard, which is worth using on a blade this long.

Living with a nine inch blade

Length buys you reach and chopping mass, and it costs you fine control. Use the first third behind the tip for detail cuts and the belly for everything else. Our Damascus hunting knife guide sets out where the size lines fall. If nine inches is more knife than you need, the Pearl Shadow compact folder covers the other extreme.
