Description

Care: brass tarnishes the way brass has always tarnished. It goes from yellow to a soft brown and then stops changing. Metal polish reverses it in a minute, but keep the polish on the bolster and off the blade, because it will lift the etch wherever it wanders. The shell scales need only a damp cloth. The habit that matters most on any folder is drying the blade before you close it: moisture trapped between blade and liner is what causes problems, not weather. Store it outside the leather pouch.

Three inches is the size most rules leave alone

The thumb notch and the filework

These are two different things and only one of them does a job. The notch on the spine, just ahead of the bolster, gives your thumb somewhere to press when you want a controlled cut with the front of the edge — whittling, opening a seam, anything where you are steering rather than slicing. The filework behind it does nothing functional. It is hand work, cut with a file after the blade is ground, and it is there because someone spent the time.

How this shell varies

Shell is banded, and the bands catch light at different angles, so one scale reads cream in a room and silver in daylight while the other does the opposite. The two sides of your knife will not match each other and yours will not match the photograph. That is the material, not a sorting error.
