Description

The Woodland Whisper is a raindrop-patterned folding knife with a hardwood scale, a Damascus bolster, a thumb hole rather than a stud, and a black leather belt sheath to carry it in. Seven and a half inches open, forged and finished in Memphis. It is aimed at people who want an everyday pocket knife that does not look like the one everybody else is carrying.

Overall length 7.5 inches
Blade length 3.5 inches
Handle length 4 inches
Handle Hardwood scale with a Damascus bolster
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Pattern Rain drop Damascus
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Raindrop is a drilled pattern, not a folded one

Most Damascus figure comes from how a billet is folded and twisted. Raindrop comes from what the smith does afterward, drilling or punching shallow dimples into the stack and then forging it flat again, which drags the 352 layers into concentric rings around every dimple. The result reads as rows of soft circles rather than the long flowing bands of a ladder or twist. It is subtle in flat daylight and shows best at an angle under a lamp. the folding and forge-welding process explains the step this pattern is built on top of.

The honest cost of carrying carbon steel

Every layer in this blade is 1095 or 15N20, and both rust. Not slowly, either. A sweaty pocket in August plus a blade folded away damp will show orange freckles inside a couple of days. Owners who get twenty years out of a knife like this do one thing consistently: they wipe it before it goes back in the pocket. The grey-brown film that builds over the first year is a different thing entirely, and you want it, because oxidized steel resists further corrosion. what corrosion does to a Damascus blade separates the two.

Size, and what it means in a pocket

At 7.5 inches open, with a 3.5-inch blade over a four-inch handle, this sits at the upper end of what most people will carry in jeans without thinking about it. If you want a similar size with a handle that announces itself, the turquoise resin folding knife takes the opposite approach.

Opening, lockup and the hole in the blade

The thumb hole is cut through the blade rather than pinned on, which means there is no stud to catch on a pocket seam and nothing that can work loose. It opens one-handed with a roll of the thumb once the pivot has bedded in over the first week or two. The lock engages against the tang with a firm stop and no lateral play, and the pivot is adjustable if it ever loosens. A drop of oil into the pivot every few months keeps it turning cleanly.

Handle and sheath

The scale is a dense hardwood, warm in the hand and unbothered by damp, set against a bolster cut from the same layered steel as the blade so the pattern carries into the handle. Grain varies from knife to knife. The leather sheath is a belt pouch with a stitched welt, and it is meant for carrying rather than storing: leather holds moisture, and a carbon-steel blade left inside one will find that out. Store the knife on a shelf, carry it in the sheath.

Made in Tennessee

Forge welding, grinding, heat treat, etching, fitting and the final edge all happen in our Memphis shop, and laser engraving can be added before checkout if it is going to be a gift. Every order ships with a lifetime warranty.
