Handle – Brass

Aimed at: the collector who wants one uncluttered piece, and the flipper who likes a knife with mass. With no inserts there is nothing to work loose, nothing to crack in dry air, and nothing that goes out of fashion. It is the plainest version of this pattern and the one that will look the same in twenty years.

What solid brass does to the balance

Brass runs roughly two and a half times the density of the hardwoods used for inserts, so filling the handles with it moves the balance point back toward your hand. A rearward balance feels planted instead of tip heavy, and during a rollover the handles carry their own momentum through the arc. You do less work and the knife does more. It also means this is not the lightest balisong on the rack, and after an hour of practice your forearm will know that. Balisong handle construction explains how the internals change the feel.

The blade

High carbon steel, oil tempered into the high fifties on the Rockwell scale. That is deliberately short of the maximum this steel can reach, and it is the right call. A blade a point or two softer is meaningfully tougher, and toughness is what you want in something that will meet a hard floor while you are learning. The edge also comes back quickly on a stone.

Care

Carbon steel and brass both react with the air, and neither is a problem once you expect it. Wipe the blade after handling, because skin oils are mildly acidic and are the usual cause of fingerprint marks on a bare carbon flat. A light film of oil once a month keeps things stable. The brass will drift toward a soft antique tone over a year or two. Polish it back with a brass cloth if you like it bright, or leave it and let it darken. Nothing here calls for a specialist product.

Before you order

Is it heavy? Noticeably, and that is the reason to choose it. If you want lighter, a wood or bone inserted handle is the way to go.

I have never flipped before. Where do I start? Slowly, over a bed, working through beginner flipping drills.

Is there a pattern welded version? A Damascus brass balisong covers that if you want figure in the steel.
