Channel handles

The handles here are channel construction: each one is a single piece of brass with a slot milled down its length for the blade to sit in, rather than two slabs sandwiched around spacers. Channel handles are heavier and stiffer, and they hold their alignment better over time because there is no stack of parts to loosen. Six and a half ounces in the hand

6.5 ounces spread across 4.7 inch handles gives this knife a slow, deliberate swing. Momentum carries it through a rotation with very little wrist, and it settles into the closed position with a solid feel rather than a rattle. Brass changes color, and that is fine

Brass oxidizes. Within a few weeks of handling, the bright yellow finish will warm into a deeper gold, and over a year it goes browner still. Some owners polish it back with a soft cloth every so often; others let it go and prefer the look. Neither harms the metal. The dark wood inlays set into the brass and the filed detail along the handle edges both stay as they are. Care: carbon Damascus takes fingerprints, so wipe it dry after handling and keep a thin film of light oil on it — fingerprints alone will etch marks into a bare carbon blade over a few weeks. Put a single drop of oil in each pivot and work it through; more than that collects dust inside the channels, and channels are harder to flush out than open sandwich handles. Clean the brass with a dry or barely damp cloth and skip abrasive polish, which will round over the filed edges and dull the crispness of the inlay seams.
