Description

Two metals share one handle here. An engraved brass channel on one side, copper on the other, so the BMK-2005 reads differently depending on which face is turned toward you. Both are cut by hand, and the tooling marks are part of the look.

Overall length 8 inches
Blade length 3.5 inches
Handle length 4.5 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Weight 7.23 oz
Handle Brass And Copper Handle

Made for: collectors who still want the thing to open and close like a tool. Eight inches deployed with a 3.5 inch blade puts it mid-range for a balisong: substantial in the palm, short enough to disappear into a jacket pocket.

What 7.23 ounces actually feels like

That figure is heavy for this length, and the mass sits forward of the pivots because brass and copper are dense. The knife wants to keep rotating once you start it. Slow, deliberate rollovers feel effortless. Fast aerial work takes more wrist than a skeletonized handle would, so budget a week of practice if you are coming off something lighter.

How brass and copper age

Neither metal stays the color it arrives in. Brass dulls toward a soft gold. Copper goes browner and eventually picks up green in the engraving recesses, which is where most owners decide they like it. If you want the factory shine back, a metal polish and a soft cloth will return it in about five minutes. Leave it alone and the two metals drift apart in tone, which makes the contrast sharper over a year or two.

The blade profile

The edge sweeps up to a raised point, so the belly does the cutting and the tip stays out of the way until you angle it down. Good for anything you slice on a board or against your thumb. Less good for boring a hole or prying, where a straighter spine would give you more control.

Keeping it right: Dry the Damascus after handling and put a thin film of oil on it before the knife goes in a drawer. Fingerprints etch into pattern-welded steel faster than most people expect. The brass and copper need nothing at all unless you want them bright, and any polish you use on them should be kept off the blade etch, which it will lift.

Before you buy

Will the handles tarnish? Yes, and quickly. Copper starts shifting within weeks of regular handling. Most owners come to prefer it; if you do not, polish restores the original finish without harming the engraving.

Is the pattern etched or printed? Forged. The layers are real steel, welded and drawn, then acid etched at the end so the two alloys show at different depths. Read what 352 layers means for the arithmetic behind it.

How does it compare to a plain-steel balisong? Heavier, more expensive, and more to look after. If you want a flipper you can be careless with, the D2 balisong with bone inserts is the sturdier daily choice. Our balisong construction guide covers what changes between the two.
