Description

Six point two inches open. This is the smallest Damascus balisong on the list, and the stag antler is what stops it feeling like a toy — dense, ridged material that fills a hand better than its dimensions predict.

Overall length 6.2 inches
Blade length 3.1 inches
Handle length 3.1 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered

Sized for: pocket carry and for people who find full-size balisongs unwieldy. A 3.1 inch blade on a 3.1 inch handle is an even split, and the whole knife closes down to something you genuinely forget you are carrying.

Stag antler, and why no two match

Stag is shed antler, cut and shaped rather than molded. The outer bark is rough and ridged; the inner material is smooth and paler. Where those meet on any given scale is an accident of which part of which antler it came from, so color runs anywhere from cream through orange to deep brown, sometimes across a single handle. It is also grippier than any polished material when your hands are wet, which is the practical reason it has been used on knives for centuries.

A 3.1 inch blade is a different tool

Short blades are precise. You can choke up close to the edge, see exactly what you are cutting, and work in tight space. What you cannot do is reach, and you cannot generate much force. For opening packages, cutting cord and food prep it is plenty. For anything that needs a long drawing stroke, it is not enough knife. Buyers with smaller hands often find this size is the one that finally fits — there is more on that in choosing a knife for smaller hands.

How the size changes the flip

Short handles rotate fast. Everything happens sooner than it does on a full-size knife, the arc is tight, and there is less time to correct a bad catch. Experienced flippers usually find small balisongs harder rather than easier. If you want the same steel and construction with room to breathe, the brass and bull horn balisong is the far end of the range.

Simple upkeep: Dry the blade and put oil on it before it goes in a drawer; a small blade has less steel to lose to a rust pit. Stag needs no treatment at all, though it darkens with handling and most owners prefer it that way. Clear the pivots occasionally, since a knife this size lives in a pocket and pockets are full of lint. Full detail is in our Damascus care and sharpening guide.

Size and fit questions

Is this a trainer? No. It has a full edge and it is sharp on arrival.

Will stag crack over time? Properly cut and pinned stag is stable. Extreme dryness is the only real enemy, and household conditions are fine.

Does it fit in a front pocket? Easily. At 6.2 inches open it closes to roughly the length of a marker pen.
