Description
Ask ten hunters what a classic knife handle looks like and a good many will describe something close to Blackthorn: dark buffalo horn, a thin bright spacer, a polished satin blade, and no plastic anywhere in sight. This is the traditional end of our gut hook line, built on the same D2 spine as its working stablemates but dressed the way knives were dressed before anyone had heard of a polymer scale.
Horn, and what it is really like
Water buffalo horn is keratin — the same family of material as a fingernail, grown rather than manufactured. Cut into slabs and polished, it comes up a deep translucent charcoal shot through with faint smoky striations, and no two pieces are alike. Held in the hand it is warmer than steel and warmer than stone, slightly waxy under the fingers, and it grows more comfortable the longer you hold it. A bright spacer separates the horn from the blade and gives the front of the handle a crisp line. Horn is a natural material and it behaves like one: it dislikes long stretches of dry heat, so keep it away from a hot dashboard and it will stay flat and glossy for a lifetime.

The blade
Four and a half inches of D2, flat ground, brought to a polished satin and fitted with an integral gut hook. D2 holds an edge in a way that surprises people coming off cheap stainless, because its hardness and carbide load are both high; the same qualities mean it takes patience to sharpen, and rewards a diamond or ceramic surface over a soft stone. The hook is ground and buffed inside the curve so it slides rather than snags, and the point is left fine enough for caping work. The sheath
A black leather belt sheath comes with it, cut and formed here to this blade’s exact outline, stitched, and closed with a snap strap over the handle so it stays put when you are climbing in and out of a truck. Leather moulds to a knife over the first season and grips it harder as it does.
Built in Memphis
We forge, grind, heat treat, fit and finish in Memphis, Tennessee. Blanks are profiled in house, hardened and tempered in our own ovens, then hand ground and hand rubbed. The horn is fitted and shaped to the tang by hand, which is the slow part — natural material cannot be run through a machine and expected to come out matched. It is a knife that carries the marks of being made rather than moulded, and those marks are the reason people keep them.
Care that is worth doing
Get the blade dry before it goes away, especially inside the hook. A light oiling once or twice a season is enough for storage. Wipe the horn with a barely damp cloth and buff it dry; if it ever looks dull, a trace of paste wax brings the depth straight back. Do not leave the knife sheathed for months at a stretch, and never put it through a dishwasher — the heat and detergent are hard on both horn and edge. Sharpen on a fine diamond plate, then finish the hook with a round file or tapered rod.
Who it suits
