Wild Fern is the one to take when you know it is going to rain. Every material on it was picked for indifference to water: a stonewashed blade that does not care about a few marks, forest green canvas Micarta scales that cannot swell or rot, and stainless screw hardware instead of peened pins. It is the least precious knife in this group and, for anyone who actually goes outside, probably the most useful.

Stonewashing, and why it is more than a look

A stonewashed finish is produced by tumbling the finished blade with abrasive media until the surface takes on a soft, irregular matte texture. Two things follow. It scatters light instead of reflecting it, so the blade stays non-reflective in the field. And because the surface is already covered in fine random marks, new scratches simply disappear into the pattern rather than standing out as bright lines. A stonewashed knife looks the same after five years of hard use as it did on day one, which no polished blade ever manages.

The steel

D2 tool steel, hardened and tempered in our own shop. High carbon for edge retention, roughly twelve percent chromium for corrosion resistance, and a carbide structure that keeps cutting long after a softer steel has given up. It is not stainless and it is not marketed as such, but in practice it shrugs off damp, sap and blood far better than the carbon steels traditionally used for this kind of work.

The grind

A drop point with a low, strong tip and a long belly — the geometry that has dominated hunting and bushcraft knives for a century because it does everything competently. It skins, it feathers wood, it preps food, it cuts cord. Handle

Forest green canvas Micarta, sanded to expose the weave so the texture bites into a wet or gloved hand, contoured through the palm and rounded at every edge. Two stainless screws hold it to the full tang, which means the scales can be removed for a proper clean after a messy job — not a common feature at this size.

Sheath

White full-grain leather stitched in green to pick up the scales, formed to the blade and cut with a belt slot. Supplied.

Keeping the edge

D2 holds an edge a long time and then needs a proper stone rather than a quick fix, because the chromium carbides that make it durable also make it stubborn. Diamond or good ceramic, moderate pressure, consistent angle. Between sharpenings a few strokes on a rod will straighten a rolled edge and buy you weeks — the difference between the two operations is explained in our piece on honing versus sharpening, and understanding it will save you a lot of unnecessary grinding.

General care

Rinse and dry the blade after use. Oil it lightly if it is going away for a season. The handle can be scrubbed. Keep the pale leather out of prolonged wet and store the knife outside the sheath.

Questions

Does the stonewash wear off? No, it is a surface texture in the steel itself, not a coating.

Will the green fade? The dye runs through the composite. Normal use will not touch it.

Can I take the handle off? Yes, with a torx driver. Do it carefully and keep the screws somewhere safe.
