Description

Light gives you away. A polished blade catching low sun across open sage or stubble is visible a long way off, and there are hunts where that matters. Sagebrush answers with a stonewashed D2 blade in flat matte grey and sage green canvas Micarta scales — a knife that disappears against the country it was named for and gives nothing back to the sky.

Stonewash, and what it earns

The blades are tumbled with abrasive media after grinding, which leaves a fine random texture rather than a directional polish. The finish kills glare, it disguises the small scratches every working knife picks up, and the fine texture gives a film of oil something to cling to. On a semi-stainless steel like D2, that last point is a real, if modest, advantage in wet country.

Why D2 for a hunting blade

D2 carries a high carbon load and around twelve percent chromium, and the chromium is largely tied up in hard carbides rather than dissolved in the steel. That is the trade at the heart of this alloy: outstanding wear resistance and edge retention, and only partial corrosion resistance. Practically, it means you can dress two animals on one edge and it means you must not leave the knife wet. Hunters who make that swap knowingly rarely go back. Our guide to picking a hunting knife works through the same tradeoffs for anyone still deciding.

The handle

Sage green canvas Micarta, sanded to a matte finish that keeps a slight tooth, assembled on stainless screw hardware with a lanyard tube through the butt. Micarta does not care about water, blood, solvent or temperature; it will not swell, rot or come loose from the tang, and it grips harder as your hands get wetter. The screws mean the scales come off for a proper end-of-season clean, which is a small thing until the first time you need it.

Hook, point and belly

The integral gut hook is sunk into the spine, and its inner curve is opened, filed and polished by hand so it draws through hide cleanly. Ahead of it the drop point has enough belly for skinning and a fine enough tip for caping, and the spine carries jimping at the ricasso for thumb purchase. The point of the hook is simple: it takes the single most dangerous cut in field dressing and makes it a controlled pull rather than a careful stab.

Made here

Profiled, heat treated, ground, assembled and hand finished in Memphis, Tennessee, with a dark brown leather belt sheath cut and wet formed to this blade, stitched, burnished and fitted with a snap strap. Small shop, small runs, and the tolerances of hand work rather than the sameness of a production line.

Maintenance, honestly stated

Dry the blade every time, and get inside the hook where hair and blood pack in. Before storage, a thin protective film — mineral oil, camellia, anything food safe — is enough; there is a rundown of the options in our guide to knife oils. Wash the Micarta with warm soapy water. Never store the knife inside the leather, and never run it through a dishwasher. Bring the main edge back on a fine ceramic; the hook itself takes a tapered rod. If you would rather have coyote tan than sage, Dunewalker is the same knife in a desert colourway.

Weight and balance

The balance point sits just behind the ricasso, which keeps the blade lively for detail work rather than nose-heavy like a chopper. Combined with the palm swell in the scales, it means long sessions breaking down an animal do not leave your hand cramping, and the knife stays controllable when your fingers are cold and wet.
