Daily carry: a pocket knife for people who look at their pocket knife. Three and a half inches of blade, seven and a half open, with a thumb stud so it comes out one-handed. It is a comfortable size for the ordinary cutting a day throws at you without being the knife that makes a room go quiet.
Resin versus natural shell
Abalone resin is cast rather than cut, which means the maker controls where the color lands and how deep it goes. Natural shell is thin, brittle, and has to be backed and inlaid in small pieces. Resin gives you the same iridescent depth in a scale thick enough to be structural, and it will not chip if the knife goes down a flight of stairs. The trade is that no two castings are identical either, so the ribbon pattern on yours will run its own way.
Brass front, resin back
The bolster is a long brass sweep covering roughly the front half of the handle, curving back into the resin rather than meeting it at a straight line. That extra length is not styling — it puts metal where the pivot and the lock take their load, and it is why the frame stays rigid on a knife with a decorative handle. The thumb stud and the pins are set into the brass, and the brass will patina with carry.
The blade pattern flows with the profile
This is a twist Damascus rather than a raindrop, so the layers read as long sweeping waves that follow the curve of the blade up to the point instead of forming closed rings. On a folder that suits the shape, because the pattern lines end at the tip rather than being cut off by it.
Care: resin is the material to be careful with, and the enemy is solvent, not water. Keep acetone, nail polish remover, brake cleaner and strong degreasers away from the scales entirely — any of them will cloud or soften the surface permanently. Clean the handle with a damp cloth. Blow the pivot out and put one drop of light oil in it when the action gets sticky. The Damascus blade is high carbon, so dry it after cutting anything wet or acidic, and give it a wipe with an oiled rag every few weeks if you carry it daily.
