Description

Chrome Wrangler is the mirror-polished one. Same seven and a half inch bull cutter, same three and a half inch sheepsfoot blade with a notched choil, but the steel is D2 tool steel taken to a high mirror rather than etched or stonewashed.

The handle is olive burl wood over black fiber liners, with a mosaic pin inlay and a lanyard hole through the butt. There is no bolster on this one — the scales run straight to the blade. The tang is full, with black fiber between tang and scales.

Best in the hands of: someone who wants the warm figured wood but not a busy blade. Pairing burl with a plain mirror flat lets the handle carry the whole visual weight of the knife, which is a quieter look than a patterned blade under the same wood.

What D2 gives you

D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel. There is enough chromium to slow corrosion badly but not enough to make it stainless, which puts it in between — noticeably more forgiving than a plain carbon blade, still not something you can leave wet. In exchange you get wear resistance and a working edge that lasts. Where it lands against the alternatives is set out in the Damascus, D2 and 440C comparison.

No bolster, and why that is a choice

Several knives in this family carry a metal bolster where the blade meets the handle. This one does not — the burl scales run right up to the ricasso. Leaving it off keeps the knife lighter in the hand, gives you one less seam where dirt collects, and lets the wood figure run uninterrupted from butt to blade.

Living with a mirror finish

A mirror is the least forgiving finish there is. It shows every fingerprint and every fine scratch, and those hairlines accumulate with honest use. Some owners polish them out with metal polish and a soft cloth; others let the blade earn a satin of its own and stop worrying about it. Neither is wrong, but it is worth deciding which you are before you carry it into a working day. A polished flat does release food and fat more cleanly than a textured one.

After handling: wipe the blade dry and put a thin oil film on it, particularly after cutting anything acidic. Hand wash only. The olive burl is stabilized and needs no oiling, though a wipe keeps it clean. Do not store the knife in the leather sheath long term — leather draws moisture.

FAQs

Is D2 stainless? No. It resists rust far better than plain carbon steel but will spot if left wet.

Why is there no bolster? By design — it keeps the wood figure continuous and the front of the knife light.

Will the mirror scratch? Yes, with honest use. Polish the hairlines out, or let it earn a satin of its own.

What is the Damascus version? The Amber Drover in hand-forged Damascus pairs the same burl with a patterned blade.

What hides marks better? The Ember Frost in black oxide is the same steel, non-reflective.
