Description

Ember Frost is the dark one. A seven and a half inch bull cutter with a three and a half inch sheepsfoot blade and a notched choil, in D2 tool steel finished in black oxide — a non-reflective black that kills glare completely across the flat.

Against that, the handle is layered black and orange Micarta, contoured so the grinding cuts down through the stack and opens the layers into concentric rings across the palm swell. The hardware is black screw inlays rather than bright pins, and the tang is full.

Aimed at: the buyer who wants a working knife that looks tactical rather than western. Everything else in this family leans on wood, bone and brass. This one is black steel, black hardware and a synthetic handle, with the orange doing the only talking.

What black oxide does, and what it does not

Black oxide is a chemical conversion of the steel surface — the top layer of the blade is converted to black iron oxide rather than having paint or ceramic sprayed onto it. Because it is a conversion it adds no thickness, so edge geometry is untouched and it cannot chip or peel like an applied coating. What it will do is wear: rub points and the area behind the edge go gray over time. It also offers only mild corrosion resistance, so it does not replace oiling.

Screws instead of pins

The scales are held by black hardware screw inlays rather than peened pins. That is functional, not cosmetic: screws can be snugged if they ever loosen, and the scales come off for a proper clean, which peened pins do not allow. The tang underneath is still full length — full tang against partial tang explains why that matters more than the fasteners.

Contoured layered Micarta

The scales are alternating black and orange fabric layers set in resin, then shaped. Because contouring cuts through the stack at an angle, the exposed layer edges form rings that follow the handle, and the pattern is a direct map of how much material came off where.

Maintenance: wipe the blade dry after use and keep a light oil film on it; black oxide is a finish, not rustproofing. Micarta needs nothing beyond soap and water. Store the knife out of the sheath. If you are still deciding what belongs on your belt daily, choosing an EDC knife works through the trade-offs.

FAQs

Will the black finish rub off? It wears rather than flakes. Expect gray at contact points over time.

Can I take the scales off? Yes — that is the point of the screws.

Does the orange fade? No, the color runs through the material.

Why does the handle pattern look like rings? Contouring cuts through the layer stack at an angle, so the rings map how much material came off where. Every one is slightly different.

What is the closest non-black option? The Oxblood Rider in stonewashed carbon steel also hides wear.
