Suits: a hunter who wants one knife for the whole job. Four inches of blade with a deep belly is the classic size for field dressing and caping — long enough to open an animal, short enough to control at the tip, and light enough at 4.9 ounces that you forget it is on your belt until you need it.
Stag, and why every one differs
The handle is natural antler, kept in its own shape rather than ground flat. That means the ridges, the darker bark near the crown and the pale marrow-side channels are unique to the piece of antler yours was cut from. There is a red spacer set between the handle and the steel bolster, which is the only decorative note on an otherwise plain knife. Antler grips better wet than any polished synthetic, which is exactly the condition you use a hunting knife in.
The polish is a choice with a cost
A mirror finish is the hardest surface to produce and the easiest to mark. It shows every fingerprint and it will pick up fine scratches from the sheath over years of use. What it buys you is a surface with nowhere for blood and moisture to sit — a polished blade wipes genuinely clean, and food and fluid release from it more readily than from a satin or bead-blasted face.
The sheath
Oxblood leather, hand-stitched, tooled along the welt, cut to this blade’s profile so the knife seats with a click rather than rattling.
Care: stag is the part that needs thinking about. Do not soak it and do not leave it near a heater or on a dashboard, because antler is porous and will crack if it dries hard and fast. Wipe the handle with a barely damp cloth and dry it. For the blade, the mirror finish makes maintenance easy — a clean dry cloth after each use, and a wipe with a lightly oiled rag before it goes in a drawer. Do not use polishing compound to chase out a scratch unless you are prepared to re-polish the whole flat, because a buffed patch shows worse than the scratch did.
Questions hunters ask
Is the blade pattern-welded? No. This one is a plain polished blade with no Damascus pattern in it. If a layered blade is what you want, the Frilled Shark Damascus knife is the same class of tool with the pattern showing.
