Description

The Stag Crest is the stainless one. A mirror-polished 440C blade, cream stag antler scales with their dark bark patches left in, steel bolsters separated by thin copper spacer rings, brass pins and a small shield medallion set into the near scale — and a tan tooled leather belt sheath with a snap closure to carry it in. Built in Memphis for hunting, camping and anyone who works around water.

A 3.5-inch blade in a folding knife

Three and a half inches is a lot of blade for a folder, and it is why this one travels in a sheath rather than clipped inside a pocket. Closed, the handle measures four inches, which gives you a full-hand grip instead of a three-finger one, and that is what you want when you are working wet and the knife wants to leave. Length also has legal consequences: plenty of city ordinances draw a line at three inches of blade, so confirm your local rules before you make this a daily carry. choosing an everyday carry knife works through the sizing question.

440C and water

This is the practical case for stainless. The chromium content lets 440C sit in a damp sheath, take a splash of lake water, and come out fine after a rinse, which is precisely what high-carbon Damascus will not tolerate. If you are cleaning fish on a boat or field-dressing in wet weather, that is worth more than a pattern. It also comes back on a basic stone quickly and holds a working edge through a full day.

Stag and the sheath

The stag scales give you texture where a polished handle would go slick with slime or blood. Treat the hand-stitched leather sheath as transport rather than storage, because leather holds moisture against steel and carries salts left over from tanning. Store the knife outside it. When scale and grit make the pivot feel gritty, flushing and re-oiling a folder pivot takes about five minutes. If you like stag but want a clipped pocket knife instead, the VG-10 stag folder with a pocket clip is built around the same material.

The blade shape

It is a slim clip point with a long, shallow curve and a fine tip, which is a genuinely useful profile outdoors: the point goes where you put it for the delicate work at the start of a job, and the belly behind it does the longer strokes. The grind is taken high and finished bright rather than left with a satin face, so the whole flank reflects. That polish is not only cosmetic on a stainless blade — a smooth surface gives moisture less to cling to.

The small details on the handle

Antler is not uniform stock. Each pair of scales is cut, matched as closely as the material allows, and then brought down flush to the bolsters by hand, so the cream and the dark patches land differently on every knife we build. The copper rings between bolster and scale are there for the color break, and they will slowly darken while the steel around them stays bright, which is the kind of aging a knife like this is supposed to do.

Care, and where it is made

Rinse it, dry it, and put a drop of oil in the pivot now and then. Stainless is forgiving but it is not immune, and salt water in particular should be rinsed off the same day. Everything is cut, fitted, sharpened and inspected in our Tennessee shop, laser engraving can be added at checkout, and every order ships with a lifetime warranty behind it.
