Description

The pattern runs through the blade and through the bolster on this one, and there is a steel clip on the back of the handle. Hand-forged folders do not usually come with a clip.

Overall length 6.5 inches
Blade length 3 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Handle Polished black horn scales with brass liners and a Damascus bolster
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Weight 5 oz
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Its job: daily pocket carry for someone who is tired of carrying what everyone else carries. Three inches of edge covers boxes, cord, food and the hundred small jobs a day produces, and the clip means it rides where you can find it rather than at the bottom of a pocket.

Care: this steel is high carbon, so it does not shrug off moisture the way stainless does. Dry the blade after it meets anything acidic — citrus, onion, tape adhesive — and it stays bright without any routine. If you carry it every day, a pass with a lightly oiled cloth every few weeks is more than enough. The pivot deserves more attention than the blade: rinse grit out rather than forcing the action through it, dry it, then put one drop of light oil on the pivot. Do not leave it stored inside the leather sheath.

What 3 inches and 5 oz feel like in a pocket

Five ounces is a knife you notice. It rides better in a jacket than in the front pocket of thin trousers, where it drags the fabric. Open, 6.5 inches gives you a full four-finger grip instead of the three-finger perch smaller folders leave you with, and that is where most of the comfort comes from. Our guide to choosing an EDC knife works through the weight-versus-capability trade in more detail.

The clip, honestly

A pocket clip is a wear item. It holds tension against a seam, so it scuffs the handle underneath it and it will loosen before anything else on the knife does. What you get in exchange is a knife that sits in a known place and comes out the same way every time. If you would rather have a clipped Damascus folder in a slimmer profile, the Taipan clip folder is the lighter version of the same idea.

What the pattern does and does not do

Pattern-welded steel does not cut better than plain steel. Geometry cuts; the pattern is what the billet looks like. What it does give you is a blade where the etched surface has a faint texture rather than a slick polish, and a knife nobody else in the room is holding. Judge the cutting on the grind, visible along the flat, and the pattern on whether you like looking at it.

What people ask before buying

Can I sharpen it without ruining the pattern? Yes. The pattern goes through the steel rather than sitting on it. Sharpening takes the etched surface off the last millimeter of edge, and that strip darkens again on its own with use.

Why does mine look different from the photograph? The billet is folded by hand, so the figure lands differently on every blade. The layer structure is the same; the drawing it makes is not.

Is five ounces heavy for a three inch folder? Compared with a modern factory folder, yes, noticeably. That is what solid bolsters and forged stock cost you. Read our Damascus care and sharpening guide before your first touch-up.
