What it is for: commemoration and display. It is a real knife with a real edge and full working geometry, but nobody buys this to dress a deer with it, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Care: the blade underneath the gold work is high carbon pattern-welded steel and it will corrode if it is stored damp. The gold plating is a surface layer over engraved steel; it will not rust but it will wear through if you rub it, so never take a polish or an abrasive cloth anywhere near the decorated flats. Handle the knife with clean dry hands or cotton gloves and wipe it with a soft cloth afterward. Buffalo horn is stable but dislikes extreme dryness, and a display case in front of a radiator is exactly the wrong place for it. Storing a display knife is a different problem from storing one you use.

What the money buys, honestly

It buys hand forging, hand engraving, gold plating over that engraving, matched buffalo horn, gold-finished bolsters, and a fitted wooden case with velvet and an engraved plaque. It buys a limited anniversary subject that will not be made again after 2026. Those are real things and they take real hours.

What the money does not buy

It does not buy better steel. The blade is the same 1095 and 15N20 pattern weld at the same 58 to 60 HRC that goes into knives here at a tenth of this price. It does not buy better edge retention, better geometry or a tougher heat treat. It does not buy a guaranteed investment; commemorative knives are worth what a collector will pay on the day, which is not a number anyone can promise you. If your interest is a forged blade that cuts well, a working Damascus hunter gives you the identical steel for a fraction of this. Buy this one because you want this object, not because you expect it to appreciate. What drives the price of Damascus lays out where cost actually comes from.

Living with a display piece

Take it out of the case occasionally. Sealed cases trap humidity against steel and a knife left untouched for two years is more likely to come out marked than one handled every few months. Keep a light film of oil on the undecorated parts of the blade and leave the gold alone entirely.

Before you commit

Is the gold solid? No. It is gold plating over hand-engraved steel, which is standard for decorated blades and is what allows the detail in the engraving.

Does it come with the wooden case? Yes, along with the hand-stitched leather sheath.

Can I add engraving of my own? Yes, as a paid option before it ships, though think carefully about adding anything to a blade already engraved this heavily.
