For: flippers who would rather not think about a natural material at all. A one-piece brass handle has no insert seams, no pins to work loose and nothing that expands at a different rate to anything next to it. It is the simplest handle we build, and simple is most of why it sells.

Solid metal changes the timing

Take wood out of a handle and put metal in its place and the whole thing gains mass along its full length rather than only at the ends. The swing gets slower and much more even. Rollovers and aerials need less correction because there is no light middle section for the handle to pivot around. The trade is that it wants a firmer grip, since slick fingers and a polished handle are a poor combination, and that matters more in summer than in winter.

What this handle looks like in five years

It stops being uniform. The contact patches under your thumb and index finger stay bright because they are constantly burnished, while everything else drifts through gold into a dull brown. You end up holding a map of your own grip. It polishes out any time you want it to, and most owners eventually stop bothering.

Learning on it

Heavier is not harder. A slower rotation gives you longer to react and is easier to read than a light knife that snaps through the arc. Where the weight punishes you is on the drops, because this one lands harder than a wood-handled piece. Our butterfly knife tricks for beginners guide is the sensible place to start.

Care: the metal needs nothing structural, only a decision about appearance. Polish it or let it go brown. Vulnerability sits in the blade instead, where the carbon layers will rust, so it gets dried and gets a film of oil. One point specific to an all-metal handle: brass and steel shut in a drawer with moisture between them will mark each other, so keep the blade oiled if the knife is stored closed for months.

FAQs

Does brass turn your hand green? It can, on damp skin, and it washes straight off. A polished surface does it far less than a tarnished one, so keep it bright if it bothers you.

Is there a lighter version? The rose wood and brass bolster balisong keeps metal only at the ends. For the same handle on a tool steel blade, see the D2 brass handled balisong.

Will the pattern show on the handle too? No. The 352-layer billet is the blade only. The handles are plain brass with no figure in them.
