Description

Narra sits between two metals on this one, stainless and brass in the same frame, with a 352-layer blade between them.

Overall length 9.1 inches
Blade length 4.4 inches
Handle length 4.7 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle – Stainless / Brass with narra wood Inserts

Bought by: people who have already owned a plain balisong and want the next one to be worth looking at while it is closed. Two frame metals in a single handle is a finishing decision rather than a structural one, and it costs shop hours, which is most of why this sits where it does on price.

Narra, and why it looks different every hour

Narra is a Philippine relative of rosewood that runs from honey through to a deep blood red, often within the same board. It is chatoyant. Tilt the handle and the figure appears to move, because the interlocked grain reflects light in alternating directions. That is the whole appeal, and it is also why no two of these photograph alike. Narra darkens noticeably through its first year in daylight and then holds steady.

Two metals in one frame

Mixing them is harder than it sounds. Brass and stainless cut, file and polish at different rates, so a flush joint between them means finishing the two together rather than separately. Run a thumbnail across the transition, and if you cannot catch it, the fitting was done properly. Over time the brass will dull while the stainless stays bright, which turns a joint you could not see into one you can.

Is it worth the money

At this price you are buying hand-fitting, not more steel. The blade is the same 352-layer billet at the same 58 to 60 HRC oil temper as pieces costing a third as much, and we put the case honestly in are Damascus knives worth it. If a similar spend on a different material appeals more, the stag and engraved steel balisong is the peer piece. At the other end, the bull horn Damascus balisong gets you the same blade for a fraction of it.

Care: two metals means two routines. The stainless sections need nothing at all. The brass will spot if you put a wet hand on it and walk away, and brass polish will scratch stainless if you are careless with the cloth, so work the brass with a corner of the rag rather than the whole thing. Keep polish off the narra completely, because it lifts into the open grain and dries chalky.

FAQs

Is narra the same as rosewood? Related but not identical. Same family, similar behaviour in a handle, though narra is lighter in weight and considerably redder.

Does the wood need sealing? No. It arrives finished. If it ever looks dry, a trace of hard wax buffed off after ten minutes will hold it for a year.

What does the hardness figure actually tell me? That the blade is oil tempered into the 58 to 60 band, which is where a folding knife wants to be: an edge that stays put without a tip that snaps.
