Trail Legion is one knife built five times over. The blade is identical across the row — D2 tool steel, 11.88 inches overall, a quarter inch thick, cut to the Tom Brown tracker outline with saw teeth along the spine. What changes is the grip: rosewood, walnut, and canvas micarta in black, military green and burgundy. Two of the five blades are hand mirror polished; three are left stone washed matte.

Where the set earns its keep: camp craft. Chopping wood to length, splitting kindling, notching poles, cutting cordage. Quarter-inch stock takes batoning without complaint, and the sawback opens a groove in green wood faster than the edge would. Five knives means five people working at once.
What the twin-edge tracker geometry does
The outline splits the edge into two tools. The deep curve out front is the chopper: swing from the wrist and the belly concentrates the blade’s mass into a short arc of steel, so a knife this size bites like a small hatchet. Behind it sits a straight section close to your hand, where you have leverage and control — feathersticks, notches, trim cuts. The two never fight each other, because they never touch the wood at the same moment.
What it does not do
It is a mediocre slicer; draw it through anything long and the belly lifts the edge out of the cut. It is clumsy around joints and hide, so if skinning is the main job, buy a different profile. And the sawback is a notching saw, not a bucking saw — it cuts a groove quickly, then binds once the teeth are buried. Treat all three as design decisions rather than faults.
Choosing between the five
Micarta is canvas layered in resin. It will not swell, crack or rot, it grips harder as it gets wet, and it stays cold in the hand in winter; the black, military green and burgundy scales are the same material in different dye. The two woods are warmer to hold and better to look at, and they ask for an occasional wipe of oil in return. There is no performance gap between any of them, because the blade underneath is the same knife in every case. Pick the one you would rather pick up.
Care: D2 is semi-stainless: long edge life, but it spots if put away damp. Dry each blade, wipe mineral oil over the steel monthly, and keep the mirrored ones off abrasive pads. Store the knives out of their sheaths — storing a collection well matters more with five of them.
