Suited to: anyone who wants a handmade knife without the upkeep a carbon blade asks for. VG10 is a high-chromium stainless, which is the practical difference here: it takes a fine edge, holds it well, and shrugs off the moisture that would mark other steels.
What VG10 gives you
VG10 is a Japanese cutlery stainless built around a high chromium content with vanadium and cobalt added. Chromium is what makes it stainless; vanadium refines the grain so the edge can be taken very fine without crumbling. At 58–60 HRC it sits in the range where an edge lasts through weeks of ordinary use and still responds to a stone in minutes. Our steel comparison guide puts it against D2, 440C and pattern-welded carbon.
Mammoth scales
The handle is fossil mammoth, stabilized and cut into scales, so the streaking and color are natural mineral staining rather than dye. Every pair is different. Combined with a stainless blade it makes a knife you can carry on the water, at the coast or in the rain without a maintenance routine waiting for you afterwards.
Three inches, closed at four
Seven inches open and four closed puts this squarely in front-pocket territory. Three inches of edge is enough for cord, packaging, food and light field work, and short enough to stay uncontroversial in most places you might carry it.
The pocket clip
The clip is fitted rather than an afterthought, and it holds the closed knife against the seam of the pocket instead of letting it roll flat. Combined with a stainless blade, it means this is the one you can hand to somebody who will never clean it and it will still be fine in a year.
Edge retention in practice
Expect weeks of ordinary cutting between touch-ups, and a full sharpening once or twice a year for most owners.
Care: wash it with warm soapy water, rinse and dry. That is genuinely the whole routine for the blade. Keep the pivot free of grit and put a drop of light oil on the joint if the action starts to feel dry. The mammoth wants nothing beyond a wipe.
FAQs
Can it go in the dishwasher? No. Not because of the steel, but because heat and detergent are hard on a natural handle material and on the pivot.
How does it compare to a forged carbon blade? Less maintenance, less visual drama. Compare it to the Micarta-handled pattern-welded folder to see the difference.
