Where it earns its place: the field, after the shot. A trailing point puts the maximum amount of curved edge in contact with what you are cutting, which is what you want when you are separating hide from muscle and never want the tip to drop through. Eleven ounces of knife means it does not need pressure to keep moving.

Trailing point, explained

On most knives the point sits below the spine. On a trailing point the edge rises past it, so the belly is longer than the blade and the tip ends up high and out of the way. That is a specialist geometry: excellent for skinning and slicing, poor for drilling or prying. Our blade shapes guide shows how it compares to a drop point and a clip point.

The antler handle

Antler is cut and fitted rather than molded, so the 5 inch handle follows the natural taper of the material and each one sits slightly differently in the hand. The surface texture holds grip when your hands are wet or cold, which is the condition this knife is designed for. Spacers separate the antler from the fittings at the front.

Twelve inches and 11 ounces

That is a big field knife but not a heavy one for its length — the blade is ground thin enough behind the edge to cut rather than wedge. The weight sits forward of your grip, so long draws stay smooth without you steering hard.

The sheath and belt carry

A blade this long is only practical if the sheath is right. The hand-stitched leather included here covers the full 7 inches and the guard, and it is welted at the seam so the stitching sits below the edge rather than in front of it.

Spacers and fittings

Colored spacers separate the antler from the metal fittings at the front of the handle. They are decorative, but they also give the maker a way to take up the small variations in a natural handle material so everything seats square.

Care: get it clean the same day. Blood, fat and stomach contents are all acidic or salty and will mark high-carbon steel overnight. Wash, dry thoroughly, and oil the blade before it goes back in the pack. Store it outside the hand-stitched leather sheath between seasons, because tanned leather holds moisture against steel.

FAQs

Is it too long for field dressing? For skinning and quartering, no. For the initial opening cut, a shorter blade is easier to control.

What should I pair it with? A narrow blade for the kitchen side of the job — the stag-handled slicing knife shares the material and does the opposite work.

Which hunting knife is right for me? Our Damascus hunting knife guide works through blade length, profile and handle material.
