Suited to: a working pocket. Three inches of edge, four inches of handle and five ounces of knife is the configuration that handles most daily cutting without asking you to think about it. Cardboard, cord, tape, packaging, food. Nothing here is delicate.

Honing is not sharpening

A folder that feels dull is usually not dull. The edge has rolled over to one side, and a few passes on a leather strop or a smooth steel will stand it back up in under a minute. Sharpening removes metal and resets the bevel, and a knife in ordinary pocket use needs that perhaps twice a year. Confusing the two is how people wear a good blade down to nothing in five years. If this distinction is new to you, the honing versus sharpening explainer is worth ten minutes.

Rust, patina, and the difference

People ask whether Damascus rusts. This one can, because 1095 and 15N20 are both carbon steels with no meaningful chromium in them. What forms first, though, is not rust. It is a gray-brown patina that develops from contact with sweat and food acid, and it bonds to the steel and slows further corrosion. Leave it. Red or orange rust is the problem case, it comes from moisture trapped in the pivot or under the scales, and it lifts off with a rag, a little oil and a nylon pad. The full picture is in our answer to whether Damascus knives rust.

Five ounces in context

This is a middleweight. It is not the folder to buy if you wear light trousers and want the pocket to hang straight, and it is not the folder to buy if you want maximum heft either. It is the one you carry when you would rather not notice the knife but do want it to stay put in your hand during a hard cut. If you want the same idea built lighter and longer, the Hephaestus titanium Damascus folder runs seven and a half inches open.

What people want to know

Does the pattern go all the way through? Yes. It is forge-welded, so sharpening exposes fresh pattern rather than removing it.

Is the action smooth from new? It firms up and then loosens. Give it a fortnight of use before judging it.

Can it be taken apart? We do not recommend it. Disassembly voids the warranty and the pivot cleans perfectly well in place.
