Description

A titanium frame, wood inlay and set stones on a folding pattern-welded blade. The Hephaestus is the most decorated pocket knife we make.

Overall length 7.5 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Handle Titanium with set stones
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Built for: carrying something that does not look like a tool. It folds to pocket size and opens to seven and a half inches, but the reason to own it is the materials rather than the cutting.

Care: the blade is high-carbon and this knife lives in a pocket, which is the worst place for one. Pockets hold lint, sweat and salt. Wipe it after every carry, oil it weekly rather than monthly, and open the knife fully so the section that normally sits hidden dries too. The titanium needs nothing, because it does not corrode. The wood inlay wants no oil and no water. Clean around the stones with a dry soft brush, never a solvent and never an ultrasonic cleaner, both of which can loosen a setting.

Titanium is lighter than it looks and softer than you think

Titanium frames are used because the strength-to-weight ratio beats steel: a folder can be rigid without being heavy. What surprises people is how readily titanium marks. It is not hard at the surface, and keys or coins in the same pocket will leave fine scratches inside a week. A titanium frame carried for a year looks carried. Most owners learn to like it.

Set stones in a knife handle

Gemstones on a working tool are a genuine trade-off. They sit in bezels or prongs, and while both are secure, neither is designed for the impact of a pocket knife hitting concrete. A diamond will survive that. The setting might not. Give it a pocket of its own and check the settings with a fingernail every few months, as you would a ring.

What our specifications do and do not say

The table gives you the overall length, the steel, the layer count and the hardness. It does not give a blade length, a closed length or a weight, because the sheet for this model does not carry them, and we will not invent figures for a listing. If closed length matters for your pocket, ask us before ordering.

FAQs

Is this practical to carry every day? Physically, yes. Sensibly, that depends on how you feel about scratches. It is a folder with stones in the handle and a carbon-steel blade, and daily carry will mark all three.

Does the pattern go right through the blade? Yes. It is the structure of the steel rather than a coating, so sharpening never removes it. What sharpening does do is lighten the etch at the very edge, which is why a freshly sharpened blade shows a bright line along it.

Why is a patterned blade so much dearer than a plain one? Labor. Every fold is another heat and another chance to ruin the billet; the raw steel is the cheap part. We break the numbers down in what a real Damascus knife costs and argue the case both ways in are Damascus knives worth it.

What if I want the pattern without the delicacy? Put it in something meant to be beaten on. A spike tomahawk has nothing precious on it to protect.
