What it is for: pocket carry where you want the knife to feel like a tool rather than a trinket. Cutting cord, tape and packaging, breaking down boxes, light shop work. The three-inch tanto blade handles all of it, and the extra mass means you push the knife rather than push on it.

The weight, honestly

Most three-inch folders come in between four and five ounces. This one is 7.5. In the hand that is a genuine advantage: the knife sits still while you cut, the blade drops open with authority, and there is no flex anywhere in the handle. In a pocket it is a genuine drawback. In light trousers it pulls, in a shirt pocket it is a non-starter, and by the end of a long day you know it is there. Buy it if you like a substantial knife. Skip it if you want something you can forget about. A two-ounce neck knife sits at the opposite end of that scale if weight is your main concern.

Sharpening the tanto

The tanto grind is really two edges. The long primary edge runs straight from the handle to the shoulder, and a shorter front edge angles up to the point. They are separate bevels and each needs setting on its own. Treat them as one edge and you will round off the shoulder within a few sharpenings, which is what turns a crisp tanto into a vague sheepsfoot. Work the long edge flat on the stone, then lift the handle and do the tip section by itself. It is not difficult, it is just two jobs. See how pocket knife bevels work for the angles.

What the file-work costs you

The brass work on the spine is cut by hand and no two runs match exactly. It looks good and it traps dirt. Clean it out occasionally with a wooden pick rather than anything metal, which would scratch the brass. If the brass goes dull and warm-toned, that is oxidation, not damage, and polish reverses it.

Common questions

Where does the lock sit? The handle houses the lock and the blade should be checked for play at the pivot when it arrives. Contact us if there is any.

Can I pry with the tip? A tanto tip is stronger than most, but no. Use a screwdriver.

What are all these parts called? Our knife anatomy breakdown names every component on a folder.
