Bought for: gifts, anniversaries and pocket jewellery. This is a knife people hand across a table to be looked at. It cuts perfectly well, but nobody buys one to open shipping boxes.

Reading the pattern

The feather is the hardest of the common Damascus patterns to forge cleanly. The billet is split down its length, folded back and re-welded so the layers mirror around a central spine, and any wander in the weld shows up as a broken feather. Look at where the quill runs: on this blade it holds a clean line from ricasso to point. Our guide on telling real Damascus apart explains why an etched pattern reads differently under angled light than a printed one.

The handle, and how it wears

Polished bolsters wrap dark wood panels, held with visible pins, and a faceted stone is set into the bolster face. Polished metal is honest about its life. It picks up fine swirl marks from pocket lint and denim within weeks, and a soft cloth brings back most of the shine but not all of it. The wood darkens and takes on a slight sheen. If you want a folder that looks new in five years, this is not it; if you want one that looks used and cared for, it will get there quickly.

Carrying it honestly

A folder with a set stone and mirror bolsters is not a work knife. Grit driven into the pivot by a job site will dull the action, and the stone setting is a snag point against a pocket seam. Carry it in a jacket or in the leather slip that comes with it rather than loose alongside keys.

Care: the blade is carbon steel, and moisture left sitting on it turns into rust freckles. Dry the whole knife after handling, run a drop of light oil into the pivot and wipe the excess, and keep a trace of oil on the flats. Do not soak it to clean it. Flush with a little oil, work the blade, and dry it, which is the method set out in cleaning a folding knife. A touch of paste wax on the wood once a year is plenty.

Questions people ask

Will my pattern match the photograph? It will be the same forging technique, not the same billet. Feather patterns vary from one blade to the next.

Is it a hard-use knife? No, and it is not priced as one. If you want a plain working folder, the VG10 folder with copper bolsters is the sensible companion.

The quality is sub par for being a hand made custom knife. You can see residual epoxy that secreted from around the ruby also the diamond on the thumb stud is so small that it shouldn’t even be an option. The way it’s held in is by drilling a small hole then inserting the diamond and finally taking a tool to push in surrounding metal to hold diamond in place but since the diamond is so small it just looks like a bunch of gouge marks on the thumb stud. The blade is definitely a nice damascus pattern but the edge is quite dull. It came with a type of leather sheath that attaches to your belt and has a snake design on it that they must have got from a 2nd or 3rd grade art classroom. It looks identical to a snake that a 4 or 5 year old little boy would draw on a piece of paper. As for customer service I have never had more of a tough time with another company than this one. I think it is one man running this and I’m sure he is extremely busy and there for I told him, when he would finally answer my messages, that he should hire another person for customer service if he is so busy with the knife making part of the operation. I placed the order and within a week he said my knife was complete but there was a flaw so he was restarting it. No big deal but then after 3 weeks on the second knife he was still not done? He just finished the same knife in 1 week he claimed but now he is struggling to complete the new one after 3 weeks? I unfortunately had to pester him because this made me nervous that it was a scam but in my efforts to try and make contact with him he ignored all 10 to 12 phone calls and answered my emails days later.
