Description

A men’s size 12 band forged from pattern-welded steel, etched so the layers read as bold diagonal stripes, with a single copper line inlaid around the circumference. The Aldebaran is a ring made by knifemakers, and it looks like it.

Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Pattern Twist Damascus; no two rings identical

Worn by: people who want a wedding or signet band that does not look like every other wedding band. The pattern is forged into the metal rather than applied to it, so it is visible on the inside of the shank as well as the outside.

Care: this matters more here than on most rings, so read it. The steel is 1095 and 15N20, which are high carbon steels, not stainless. Left wet it will rust, and a ring lives on a hand that gets washed several times a day. Dry it after washing, take it off before swimming, and keep it clear of chlorine and salt water. A trace of oil every few weeks is enough. A dull haze means early surface oxidation, and a soft cloth lifts it before it becomes a pit. The copper darkens faster than the steel; some owners like that contrast and others polish it back.

What the pattern is, and why yours will differ

The stripes come from two steels folded and forge-welded together, then etched in acid so one layer darkens and the other stays light. The angle and spacing of the banding depend on how that billet was twisted and cut, so no two rings match. That is the point of the material, and why the exact figure in the photograph cannot be promised. How pattern-welded steel is actually made explains where the banding comes from.

Sizing, and the thing to check first

This is listed as a US size 12 and it is a fixed size. Forged pattern-welded steel cannot be resized the way a gold or silver band can, because cutting and rejoining the shank would interrupt the pattern and compromise the weld. Measure your finger properly before ordering, and measure at the end of a normal day rather than first thing in the morning. If size 12 is not your size, ask what else is available rather than assuming this one can be adjusted.

How it compares to the other bands

The listing title on this piece describes the steel as stainless while the specification names 1095 and 15N20, which are carbon steels. The deep black etch in the photograph is characteristic of carbon pattern welding, so treat it as a carbon steel ring and follow the care above. If you specifically want a different look in the same family, the Betelgeuse mokume band uses mixed metals for a softer, cloudier figure instead of hard stripes.

Questions about fit and finish

Will it turn my finger green? The copper inlay sits flush and is a thin line, but copper against damp skin can mark it. Keeping the ring dry prevents this.

Is the inside polished? The band is domed and finished on the inner surface, with the pattern continuing around it.

Can it be engraved inside? Ask before ordering. Engraving into a forged band is possible but it cuts through the pattern, and you should see how that will look first. Forged versus printed patterns is worth knowing when comparing rings elsewhere.
