How forged steel behaves on a hand
Steel is harder than gold or silver, so this band will not deform out of round the way a soft precious metal does when it takes a knock. The tradeoff is that it cannot be squeezed back either. It will pick up fine surface marks from work, keys and door handles, and on a dark etched finish those read as small bright flecks rather than the dull scuffs you get on a polished ring. Most owners find the band settles after a few months into an even worn sheen and then stops changing quickly. The profile here is domed rather than flat, so nothing catches as it turns on the finger.
Sizing a steel band
Size this one carefully, because a forged and etched steel ring cannot be resized afterwards without destroying the pattern at the join. Two things matter more than usual. A wide band wears tighter than a narrow one at the same nominal size, so if you are between sizes, take the larger. And fingers swell in heat and after exertion, so measure at the end of a normal day rather than first thing in the morning. If you are ordering as a surprise, borrow a ring the wearer already uses on the same finger rather than guessing from a chart.
Skin contact and daily wear
The pattern is a chemical etch that bites the two steels to different depths, so it is in the surface rather than on it and will not flake or peel. Because these are carbon steels rather than stainless, take it off before swimming in chlorine or salt water, and dry it whenever it has been wet for a while. A dry cloth is all the cleaning it needs. Avoid abrasive polishes and ultrasonic cleaners, both of which will lift the dark layers and flatten the contrast. If you want the pattern deepened again after years of wear, send it back to us rather than attempting it at home.
