Description

Trenchline is the plainest knife in this group and probably the most useful. Olive green canvas Micarta, a grey stonewashed D2 blade, black hardware, black leather. No pattern, no polish, nothing that needs looking after beyond the obvious. It is built to be carried, used and forgotten about until you need it.

The T-grip and what it changes

Hold a conventional knife and your grip strength is the limit on how hard you can drive it. Hold a push dagger and that ceiling disappears. The handle lies across the palm, the blade emerges between the middle and ring fingers, and force travels in a straight line from your shoulder through your forearm and out of the point with nothing in between that can twist or slip. Close your hand and the knife is locked to it. Nothing else in the fixed blade world holds this securely, which is why the design has survived essentially unchanged for well over a century.

The practical upshot is that a push dagger works when your hands are cold, wet, tired or gloved — precisely the conditions in which a normal handle starts to become a liability.

Canvas Micarta in olive

Micarta is made by soaking woven cotton canvas in phenolic resin and pressing the layers into a solid block under heat. Grinding the T-shape exposes the cut edges of that cloth, which is why the surface carries a fine, slightly fibrous texture and a subtle linework pattern rather than a molded finish. It is the grippiest handle material we use once your palms get sweaty, it warms to hand temperature in seconds, and it will not move with humidity the way wood does. Three fasteners run through the scales into the tang, so the handle can be stripped and cleaned.

Grey steel

D2 is a high-chromium tool steel from the die-making world, chosen here because it holds a working edge under abrasive loads far longer than a plain carbon steel and because it will tolerate neglect that carbon will not. Around twelve percent chromium makes it semi-stainless: comfortable in rain and sweat, still capable of spotting if you put it away wet.

The stonewashed finish is done in a tumbler with abrasive media. The blade comes out matte grey and non-reflective, with a randomised micro-facet surface that swallows new scratches instead of displaying them. It is the right finish for a tool you intend to actually use. Both edges are ground to a symmetrical spear point with a raised centre ridge running to the tip, which is what gives a thin double-edged blade its rigidity. If grind geometry is unfamiliar territory, our explainer on fixed blade bevels covers the basics.

Sheath and carry

Black veg-tan leather, formed wet to this blade and to the shoulders of its grip so it seats with a click, saddle stitched by hand in cream thread, closed by a strap over an antiqued brass stud, with a wide belt loop behind. At seven inches overall the whole package rides flat and short.

Upkeep, in plain terms

Soap, warm water, a cloth, then dry it properly. Oil the flats occasionally and always after contact with salt or blood. Leave the stonewash alone — no polishes, no wire wool. Micarta asks for nothing but will freshen up with a nail brush if it ever goes slick. Store it out of the leather. Two edges take twice as long to sharpen, so touch them up early on a medium ceramic or diamond stone rather than letting the steel go properly dull.

Before you carry it

Push daggers sit in their own category in the law of several states, and a handful ban them altogether regardless of blade length. Confirm what applies where you live before this goes on your belt; our state-by-state knife law overview will point you at the right questions to ask.

Made in Memphis

Profiled, hardened, tumbled, handled, sheathed and edge tested in our Tennessee shop. If you want the same knife with forged pattern steel instead of tool steel, the Damascus Nightspike is its counterpart. Mention a gift while ordering and we will pack it that way. Making and material faults are covered permanently, and the shop’s public rating stands on over 2,000 verified five-star reviews.

Not what I paid for. Liner lock barely holds the blade open. Not what I expected for the price paid.

My whole family passed this pocket knife around at dinner just to look at it. Opens smooth every time with just a flick of the thumb. This is the kind of purchase that makes online shopping worth it.
