Overall length 9 inches
Blade length 4 inches
Handle length 5 inches
Handle Olive wood and resin
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Best suited to: someone who processes their own game and wants a short, controllable blade for the close work, rather than one long knife asked to do every job badly.

Four inches is a deliberate choice

Skinning is done with the belly of the blade and the wrist, not the tip and the arm. A four-inch blade keeps your hand near the work, so you feel the hide separating instead of guessing at it. On a nine-inch knife with a five-inch handle, that leaves more grip than blade, which sounds odd on paper and is exactly right in practice: your whole hand is on the tool and only the working part is exposed. Read the skinning knife guide if you are deciding between profiles.

The handle is a stabilized hybrid

Half of it is olive burl, half is dyed resin poured in orange and deep blue-black. The resin is not decoration alone; it fills and locks the porous burl so the handle cannot move when it gets wet, which a plain wood handle will. That matters more than it sounds when your hands are slick. Because the resin is poured, no two handles break the same way across the ferrule, so the boundary on yours will not match the photograph exactly.

Care for a carbon Damascus blade

This is 1095 and 15N20 forge-welded, oil tempered into the 58 to 60 HRC range. Neither steel is stainless. That is the tradeoff for the pattern and the edge, and it means you dry the blade before it goes back in the sheath, every time. Leather holds moisture and salts, so a wet knife left sheathed is the single most common way these blades pick up spotting. Clean it with hot water and your fingers, dry it on a towel, and leave a breath of oil across it before storage. Stubborn marks come off with a cork and a little oil rather than steel wool. Our Damascus care and sharpening notes cover resharpening without wrecking the etch.

Before you buy

Is the sheath included? Yes, hand-stitched leather, carrying a retaining strap over a belt loop.

Can I use it in the kitchen? You can, but a carbon blade will react with onion and citrus and take on a grey patina fast.

Is there a smaller one? The Hornback skinner is shorter again, with a buffalo horn handle.
