A different way to hold a knife

A push dagger does not sit in your fist the way an ordinary knife does. The handle crosses your palm at a right angle and the blade comes out between your middle and ring fingers, so you are not gripping a lever — you are simply closing your hand around a bar. Everything your arm and shoulder can do goes straight down the centreline of the blade, and there is no wrist strength involved at all. It is the most secure hold in knife design, which is exactly why the shape has been around since Victorian riverboat gamblers were carrying them.

Nightspike is our forged Damascus interpretation. Four inches of double-edged spear point, a black G10 T-grip with red liners glowing at the chamfers, and a black leather sheath cut to swallow the blade to the crossbar.

The pattern is in the steel, not on it

The blade is pattern-welded: two steels of differing alloy content stacked, forge welded into one billet, then drawn out, folded and reworked until the boundaries between them wander. Grinding the blade cuts across those boundaries, and an acid etch bites one alloy harder than the other so the layers stand in relief. What you see is a genuine section through the internal structure — sharpen the blade for twenty years and the figure will still be there. Both edges are ground, meeting at a symmetrical point, with a defined centreline running the length of the blade to stiffen it. That geometry is what a spear point is for: it goes in straight and it resists being bent sideways.

The grip

Black G10 — glass cloth cured in epoxy under pressure — machined into a T that fills the palm without any hot spots, and relieved on both faces so your fingers close around a shape rather than a slab. Between the scales and the tang sits a red fiber liner, exposed as a fine red outline wherever the edges are chamfered. Three stainless pins run through. G10 will not swell, rot, absorb sweat or care what the weather is doing, and the texture bites harder as your hands get damp.

At seven inches overall with a three and a half inch crossbar, this is a compact thing. It carries flatter against the body than any conventional fixed blade of similar blade length, because the mass sits across you rather than along you.

Sheath

Black veg-tan leather, wet formed around the blade and the shoulders of the grip, hand saddle stitched in bone thread, shut by a strap over an aged brass stud, on a stitched belt loop. The knife seats deep, with only the T standing proud.

Care, and the legal note

The etched surface is thin. Wash it with a cloth and mild soap, dry it completely, and put a light film of oil on both flats — never take an abrasive pad or a gritty polish to it, or the contrast will go. Wipe fingerprints off the same day. Do not leave the knife stored inside its leather. Two edges means twice the sharpening, and a fine stone worked along the arc of each side is the way to do it.
