Steel handles behave differently

Most balisong handles are two materials: a metal channel and an insert. This one is steel the whole way through, milled open and then engraved. That does three things. It makes the handles stiffer, so there is no flex at all in a hard roll. It makes them louder, because steel on steel rings where wood or bone would thud. And it makes them cold in winter, which sounds trivial until you flip one outdoors in January.

The engraving is the fragile part

Cut scrollwork leaves raised ridges and undercut hollows. Those ridges catch grit and, over time, they burnish bright at the high points while the recesses stay dark. Most owners like that contrast and let it happen. What you should avoid is a wire brush or an abrasive paste, either of which will flatten the cut lines that you paid for. Warm water, a soft toothbrush and a dry cloth is the whole maintenance routine. Weight and balance

Cutting the handles open removes metal from the middle while leaving the bolster ends solid. The result balances further out than a plain slab handle, which makes the swing feel slower and more deliberate. Some flippers prefer exactly that for learning slow rollovers. Points people ask about

Will the engraving wear off? No. It is metal removed from metal, not a coating. It will polish and darken unevenly with handling, which is the intended result.

Does the spear point make it harder to flip? Slightly. A symmetrical point means both edges of the tip face outward, so a sloppy catch has two chances to find your finger. Practice with a trainer first, and the trick basics guide shows the safe grips.

What does the leather pouch protect? It keeps the engraving from rubbing against keys and coins in a bag.

Can the handles be re-polished? The flat outer faces can be brought back with a cloth wheel. The engraved recesses should be left dark, because that shadow is what makes the pattern legible.
