Carried by: people who want a pocket knife that looks like something. At 7.5 inches open and 3.5 inches of blade, it is a real EDC size, not a miniature, and the 4 inch closed length drops into a jeans pocket without a fight.

Mix twist, and how to read it

A mix twist billet is twisted along its length before being flattened, so the layers spiral and then get cut through at an angle when the blade is ground. The result is the tight wave pattern running across this blade rather than the straight banding of a simple ladder. Look along the flat under a lamp: real twist pattern changes as you tilt it, because it is topography, not print. That test is set out in spotting printed Damascus patterns.

Shell scales, and their one weakness

Sea shell is cut into thin slabs, bedded onto the liners and polished flat, which is why the iridescence shifts through blue, green and pink as you turn it. It is beautiful and it is brittle. A drop onto a tile floor can crack a scale where wood would only dent, and no amount of care undoes that. It is also chemically fragile: acetone, nail polish remover and strong solvents will haze the surface permanently. Warm water and a soft cloth is the whole cleaning routine.

What a brass bolster does

Brass adds weight at the pivot end, which is what makes a small folder feel settled rather than flimsy. It will also darken. Left alone it goes from yellow to a warm brown, and most owners prefer that against the shell. Polishing it back is easy but you will be doing it every few months.

Care: the blade is 1095 and 15N20 layered together, both carbon steels, so it will spot if it stays wet in a pocket. Dry it, oil the flats lightly, and put a drop into the pivot every few weeks. Never wash the knife under a tap and leave it closed, because water sits between the liners and the shell. Store it out of the leather sheath. For the wider question of what to carry daily, see choosing an EDC knife.

Questions before buying

Will my shell look like this one? The pattern in shell is natural, so the colours and the direction of the fire will differ.

Is it a lockback or a slip joint? It locks open and closes with a deliberate pull; it is not a flipper.

Is there a stainless alternative? Yes. The VG10 folder with rosewood needs no oiling at all.
