Description

No wood, no bone, no resin. Two skeletonised D2 handles drilled through with a run of holes, a satin tanto blade in the same steel, and nothing else. If you want a butterfly knife that will still be exactly as tight in ten years as it is on the day it arrives, this is the one on our bench that gets closest.

Handle – D2 Steel

An all-steel handle is a different animal

The scales here are D2, the same as the blade. Removing the organic panel material removes the most common long-term failure point on a butterfly knife. Wood, bone and horn shrink and swell with humidity, and after a couple of seasons that can loosen the fit around the pins. Steel does not do that. It also means the handles go cold in winter, ring rather than thud when they close, and show every fingerprint until you wipe them down. Some owners love exactly that; if you want warmth in the hand, this is not the one.

What D2 asks of you

D2 sits in an awkward and useful spot, carrying around eleven to twelve percent chromium: enough to shrug off humidity far better than plain carbon steel, not enough to be sold as stainless. Store it wet and it will still spot. What you get in exchange is edge retention that outlasts the simple carbon steels by a wide margin. The catch arrives at the stone, because the large carbides holding that edge also make D2 stubborn, and a tired ceramic rod will not bring it back. Diamond or silicon carbide abrasives and patience will. Sharpening technique for hard steels is worth reading before your first touch-up, and the steel comparison chart shows where this steel lands against the forged billets elsewhere in the range.

It shares its footprint with the stag-handled tanto balisong, if you would rather have natural material under your fingers.

Why the handles are drilled

Solid steel handles at this length would be unpleasantly heavy and slow. Boring a row of holes down each one takes out weight where it does the most harm to the swing, leaves the metal at the pivots and the latch untouched, and gives sweat and grit somewhere to escape. The result balances close to the pivot and turns quickly, which is a large part of why steel-handled balisongs became the standard for people who flip seriously.

The tanto point

The blade breaks to a flat forward edge and a reinforced tip rather than tapering to a needle. On a knife that will be dropped, that geometry is insurance: there is simply more steel behind the point when it meets a floor. The trade is that a straight leading edge pushes rather than glides when you draw it through something soft.

Finish, sheath and origin

Handles and blade are taken to a satin finish that hides handling marks better than a mirror would. A black leather belt sheath with a snap and a stamped logo comes in the box. Balisong ownership is regulated differently across states and countries, so check before ordering. Everything from profiling to heat treatment to setting the pivot tension happens at our Memphis workshop, under a lifetime warranty on the workmanship.
