Description

Forge Shadow is the one that still shows the hammer. Its blade is drawn from high carbon spring steel and left with the dark forge scale across the flat and spine, so the smith’s hammer marks stay visible, and only the bevel is taken down to a bright, keen edge. Behind it sit twin brass bolsters and a deep, smoke-dark buffalo horn handle. It looks like it came off an anvil this morning, because in every meaningful way it did.

This is a slightly more compact cowboy bull cutter than the rest of the string — a 3 inch square-nosed sheepsfoot on a full 4 inch handle — which puts a lot of grip behind a short, stiff, very controllable edge. The notched choil lets you choke straight up onto the blade for close work.

Built for: ranch and stock work, cutting twine, hide and feed sacks, camp and barn chores, and everyday belt carry. The forged finish and horn handle also make it a striking gift for a blacksmith, farrier, rancher or anyone who appreciates traditional forge work.

Care: High carbon spring steel is not stainless and it will rust if you let it sit wet. Wipe the blade dry every time you use it and keep a light film of mineral or camellia oil on it. The dark forge scale is a protective oxide layer — leave it be; only the bright bevel needs oiling attention. Buffalo horn is a natural material: keep it out of prolonged direct sun and standing water, and rub a little mineral oil into it once or twice a year to stop it drying. Do not store the knife inside the leather sheath long term.

FAQs

What is high carbon spring steel and why use it?
Spring steel is a tough, high carbon alloy chosen for shock resistance — it flexes rather than chips. Smiths have used it for working blades for generations because it takes a screaming edge, is easy to re-sharpen in the field with a simple stone, and will survive abuse that would crack a harder steel. The trade-off is that it needs to be kept dry and oiled.

Why is this knife shorter than your other bull cutters?
The blade on Forge Shadow is 3 inches rather than 3.5, on the same 4 inch handle. That gives a stiffer, more controllable edge and a very hand-filling grip — a good choice if you want maximum control for close livestock and utility work.

Will my knife look exactly like the photograph?
No. Buffalo horn is a natural material with its own streaking, banding and colour, from near black through smoky grey and amber, and every forged blade carries its own hammer marks and scale pattern. Your Forge Shadow will share the shape and build shown but the horn and the forge finish will be unique to it.

Is the buffalo horn ethically sourced?
Yes. The horn is a by-product of the water buffalo meat industry and is completely unrelated to ivory or to any protected species.

Is the leather sheath included?
Yes. The black leather belt sheath with contrast stitching shown in the photograph ships with the knife at no extra cost.
