Description

Desert Sultan is a scimitar in the Arabian saif tradition — thirty inches of deep, continuous curve with no straight section anywhere in the blade. That curve is the whole design philosophy: a scimitar is not a thrusting weapon, it is built so that a rider passing at speed drags the edge through the cut rather than chopping into it.

The blade is hand-forged Damascus in a raindrop pattern — rows of concentric rings pressed into the billet before it is drawn out, so the figure sits in ordered ranks rather than flowing lines — and polished bright. The handle is camel bone, pale and warm and set with brass pins, running into a hand engraved brass crossguard with downturned quillons and finishing in a curved brass pommel, engraved to match.

The presentation box

Solid walnut with brass hardware and a green velvet interior cut to hold the blade’s curve so nothing shifts in transit or on the shelf. It is the difference between shipping a sword and presenting one — worth it if this is a wedding, retirement or milestone gift. Choose it from the dropdown above; it adds $250.

On the raindrop pattern: the smith presses a grid of dimples into the billet face before the final draw, so the layers dome up around each one and surface as concentric rings. It is a controlled pattern rather than a random one, which is why it reads so clearly down a long curved blade.

On camel bone: dense, close-grained and pale, and it takes a polish like nothing else in the natural-material box. It is a traditional Middle Eastern and South Asian handle material, ethically sourced as a by-product, and it is nothing to do with ivory. Every panel has its own grain and colour — yours will not match the photograph exactly.

Care: Damascus is high carbon steel and it rusts. Wipe the blade after every handling — fingerprints are acidic — and keep a light coat of mineral oil on it. Brass develops a warm patina; leave it or bring it back with a cloth and metal polish, but stay off the engraving with anything abrasive. Keep the camel bone out of direct sun and away from radiators; like all natural bone it prefers stable humidity.

FAQs

What is the difference between a scimitar and a kilij? Both are curved sabres from the same broad family. A kilij carries a yelman — a widened, sharpened section on the back edge near the tip — and a slightly straighter base. An Arabian scimitar curves continuously from guard to point with no yelman, which makes it the purer draw-cutting shape.

Is the camel bone ethical? Yes — it is a by-product material, entirely unrelated to ivory, and legal to ship worldwide.

Is the box included in the base price? No. The sword alone is the base price; the walnut presentation box is a $250 option in the dropdown above.

Does it arrive sharp? Yes. If you want it delivered unsharpened for display, note it on the order.

Can it be engraved with a name? Yes — add laser engraving at checkout. On a piece this ornate we would suggest the blade rather than the brass.

Make it a gift: add laser engraving at checkout, and consider the walnut box. Every order ships from Memphis, TN with a lifetime warranty — backed by 2,000+ verified 5-star reviews.
