The Brown Bear belongs to our Ultra Line series, where the brief is a large forged blade finished to a standard you would normally only find on something much smaller. Nineteen inches overall, a fourteen-inch Damascus blade, stabilized wood scales and a mirror-finished steel guard. It is a great deal of object.

Hand-forged shows at this size
On a small blade a maker can hide plenty. Across fourteen inches nobody can: wander in the grind, inconsistency in the etch, or a gap at the guard all announce themselves. That is why large pattern-welded blades sit at the expensive end of any catalogue, and why factory equivalents tend to be stock-removal stainless instead. Sharpening a long blade
The technique differs from a pocket knife. Work in overlapping sections instead of sweeping the whole edge in one pass, keep the spine flat against your guide hand, and check your angle every few strokes, because it is easy to lift at the tip and finish with a recurve you never wanted. A clamped bench stone beats a handheld one here. Allow twenty minutes the first time, and follow how to sharpen a knife on a whetstone if you have not done a blade this long before.
Care
The mirror guard shows neglect before anything else does. Skin oil leaves prints that etch into a polished surface if they sit for months, so wipe it whenever you have handled it. Stabilized wood needs no feeding, but it does mark, and deep scratches through resin-filled grain cannot be sanded away without going back to bare timber. Keep a light film of oil on the flats of the blade, and check underneath the guard, which stays wet after the rest has dried. Store it horizontally where you can, since hanging a heavy blade point-down in leather for years marks both.
