Description

Fourteen inches of blade on a five-inch handle is a sword-length bowie, and the proportion is unusual enough to state plainly: nearly three quarters of this knife is edge. That makes it a chopper and a display piece, and an awkward companion for anything needing finesse.

Overall length 19 inches
Blade length 14 inches
Handle length 5 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Handle Stabilized Electric wood with High Polish Luxury Steel Guard bolster
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Built for: reach. Clearing saplings and briar, splitting kindling, and camp work where a machete would be too floppy and a hatchet too crude. Mass sits well forward, so a relaxed swing does the cutting instead of your shoulder. In a display case it performs the other job it was designed for.

What a nineteen-inch knife cannot do

Anything close in. You cannot choke up far enough to cape an animal, peel an apple or shape a tent stake without gripping the blade itself. The tip sits a long way from your hand, which is exactly wrong for controlled work. There is a practical carrying problem too: this length catches on everything worn at the belt, and across most of the country a blade of this size is a vehicle-and-campsite tool rather than something you walk into town with.

Stabilized wood and a polished guard

The scales are stabilized wood, meaning the blank was vacuum-impregnated with resin before shaping. That fills the grain, stops it drinking water, and keeps it dimensionally steady in a way raw wood is not, so nothing shrinks away from the pins after a wet season. It still scratches. The high-polish steel guard shows fingerprints instantly and will haze over the years unless it gets wiped; some owners enjoy the haze and others buff it back.

Care

A long blade makes a long drying job, and the seam where guard meets ricasso holds water. Deal with that seam first. Because so much steel overhangs the sheath mouth, damp leather contacts a great deal of metal, so hang the knife point-down after use and store it bare. For the scales, a rub of paste wax once or twice a year is enough. Oil is unnecessary on a stabilized blank and tends to leave the surface tacky. Sharpen with the knife braced against a bench rather than held in the air, because at this length a slip has somewhere to travel.

FAQs

Is the tang full length? Yes, and at this size it matters more than usual. Full tang versus partial tang explains why a chopper without one eventually fails at the handle.

What does the layer count actually mean? More about appearance than performance at this scale. We wrote up what 352 layers actually means rather than repeat the marketing version.

Is there a smaller version? Not of this model. At the far opposite end, a three-blade folding pocket knife covers the jobs this one cannot.
