Comes into its own: on hunting work where the hands get slick. Skinning, quartering, opening and caping, with enough mass behind the edge that repeated cuts do not tire your grip the way a light knife does.

Care: the joints are what need attention on a handle built like this. Water that settles in the seams between spacers will work them loose over years, so dry the handle as thoroughly as you dry the blade — a minute with a towel, not a rinse and a shelf. The blade behaves the way any high carbon steel does: wipe it down when the job is finished and it stays clean, leave it wet and it will not. Store it out of the sheath. Nothing on this knife needs a schedule, only the habit.

Why the guard is the important part

A hunting knife is used with wet, greasy, cold hands, and the single worst thing that can happen is your hand sliding forward off the handle onto the edge. The quillon here turns down toward the edge, which puts a physical stop exactly where your index finger sits. It is the difference between a knife you can bear down on in a hurry and one you have to be careful with. It also makes the knife slower to draw and slightly bulkier on a belt, which is the honest cost.

Four inches and seven ounces

Seven ounces is substantial for a four inch blade, and the guard and steel pommel push the balance point forward of your hand. That is good for cuts you repeat — the weight does part of the work — and less good for fine caping around a head, where a lighter, shorter knife stays where you put it. For heavier field work than this, our Scorpion fixed blade runs longer and heavier again.

What the spacer stack tells you

Each colored band between the bolster and the pommel is a separate piece, cut, drilled and fitted individually before the whole stack is drawn tight. Run a fingernail across the joints: on a well made handle you feel nothing, and on a badly made one you feel every seam. That is the single fastest way to judge a stacked handle, and it is worth doing before you judge anything else about the knife. Our Damascus hunting knife guide covers what else to look at.

Questions from hunters

Will it hold an edge through a whole animal? Yes. Expect to touch it up between animals rather than during one.

Can I baton with it? No. Four inches of hunting blade with a guard is the wrong tool for splitting wood, and doing it will loosen the handle stack faster than anything else you could do to it.

How do I sharpen the upswept belly? Lift the handle gradually as you draw toward the tip so the same angle stays on the stone. The belly is the part people flatten. Our whetstone sharpening guide shows the motion.
