This one is for: the buyer who wants some color in the handle and is not looking for a synthetic. Bone has been used on folding knives for two centuries because it is hard, stable and takes dye well, and it ages in a way plastic never manages.

Why carbon steel on a flipper

Carbon steel sharpens faster and finer than stainless, and it lets you feel the edge bite in a way a tougher alloy tends to mute. On a knife that gets picked up, handled and touched up often, that responsiveness is the whole appeal. The bargain is straightforward. You get a better edge for less effort at the stone, and in exchange you cannot ignore the blade once it has been wet.

The bone inserts

The bone is dyed all the way through rather than surface colored, so a scratch does not expose white underneath. Each panel takes the dye a little differently depending on its density, which is why shade varies across a batch. It is also warmer to hold than metal in cold weather, and that matters more than you would expect on something you hold for an hour at a time.

Care

Treat the blade the way you would a cast iron pan. Dry it, oil it lightly, and it stays healthy indefinitely. Leave it damp and it will spot. A cloth with a few drops of mineral oil kept in a drawer covers the entire routine. Bone wants ordinary sense: no dishwasher, no soaking, no sunny windowsills, since heat and repeated wetting are what make natural handle materials crack. If you do find a patch of orange, removing rust from a blade shows the fix before it bites deep.

Things people ask

Is this a modern design? The pattern is traditional Filipino, and where balisongs came from fills in the background.

What if I would rather not maintain a carbon blade? The same handle in D2 steel is the lower maintenance option.

Will the action wear in? It loosens a little with use, which most flippers prefer. The pivots adjust if it ever goes further than you want.

What ships in the box? The balisong and a protective pouch or box. These do not take a sheath, since a closed one is already folded around its own edge.

Legal note: ownership law is not the same everywhere. Check what applies to you before buying.
