Who buys it: collectors, and people buying a landmark gift. At twenty-five and three tenths ounces this bowie has the mass of a small machete and the finish of a display piece. Nobody is taking it into a deer camp. It is bought to be mounted, handed over at a retirement, or set behind glass with its tooled leather sheath beside it.

The blade

The pattern is a wind and mix twist that resolves into a fire figure, meaning the smith worked two different manipulations into one billet: a twisted core drawn out under the hammer, then interrupted so the layers break into flame-like tongues along the flat. Ten and a half inches gives the pattern room to develop, which is why large bowies are where Damascus smiths do their most ambitious work. The clip is long and the false edge runs most of it. Heat treatment brings it to 58–60 HRC, oil tempered.

Mammoth and brass

The pommel is mammoth material, fifteen thousand years in the ground before anyone cut it, and it shows as banded grey and cream at the butt of the handle. Ahead of it the grip is fluted in vivid blue, and between the handle and the blade sits a sculpted guard with quillons curling in opposite directions and extreme file-work cut into the brass. That file-work is the part worth examining closely: every notch is cut by hand, and the count and spacing on a piece like this represents days of bench time rather than hours.

Owning something this size

A knife of this weight needs support. Do not hang it from a nail by the sheath, which will stretch and eventually tear the leather at the belt loop; lay it flat or use a proper wall mount that carries the blade. Handle it by the grip rather than the flat, because fingerprints on a mirror-etched Damascus surface leave marks that need attention within days rather than weeks.

Care. Twice a year, take it down, wipe the blade with a soft cloth and a drop of oil, and put it back. That is genuinely all it needs in a heated room. The enemy is the sheath: vegetable-tanned leather is mildly acidic and will mark a carbon blade left inside it for months, so store the two apart. Mammoth material is stable but old, and it dislikes swings between hot and dry and cold and damp, so keep the knife off a mantelpiece above a working fire. Never let brass polish touch the etched steel.

Questions collectors ask

Is a piece at this price a sound buy? Depends what you want from it. Are Damascus knives worth it lays out the case.

How should it be displayed? Flat or mounted, and out of the sheath. See storing knives properly.

Is there anything larger? The Red Dragon Slayer at 17.5 inches is the next step up.
