Who it suits: anyone buying a knife that has to mean something. A first hunting knife, a retirement gift, a knife handed over at a wedding. It works in the field — four and a half inches of drop point handles skinning and camp duty — but the reason people order this one is the name on the tang.

The handle

The blocks are poured resin in blue, green and red, sanded back until light passes through them. Hold it up to a window and the colors go bright; put it on a table and they read almost black. A brass guard separates the handle from the blade and gives your fingers a positive stop, which matters more than it sounds when your hands are wet.

The engraving

The name sits on the flat of the tang between the guard and the first resin block, where it is protected from knocks and still legible whenever the knife is in your hand. We cut it in our own shop before the knife ships, so nothing is glued on or filled. Initials, a full name, a date or a short line all fit. Longer text gets smaller, so shorter reads better.

Balance and carry

Six and a half ounces across nine inches puts the balance point just forward of the guard. That is a working balance rather than a display one — the blade leads slightly, which is what you want for a controlled cut and what you do not want if you plan to throw it. It ships in a hand-stitched leather sheath with a snap retention strap.

Care: wash and dry by hand, and dry the sheath separately if it gets wet. Resin ignores water; the leather does not, and a damp sheath drying around a blade is what puts spots on it. Keep the blade lightly oiled if it lives in a drawer. Do not put the handle near a heat source; sustained heat is the one thing that will dull the polish on cast resin.

FAQs

Are the colors exactly as photographed? Close, but each block is poured individually, so the swirl and the depth of color vary knife to knife.

How long does personalization take? It is done in-house and adds a short time to dispatch rather than weeks.

Is the tang full length? The tang is exposed through the handle and visible at the engraving, which is how you can see it for yourself.

Read our hunting knife guide, compare grinds in full tang versus partial tang, or start from scratch and design your own knife.
