Its job: small precise cuts — thread, packaging, price tags, fruit, garden ties — done with a properly forged edge rather than a stamped one.

Two steels, one bar

The blade is built from alternating layers of 1095 and 15N20. Both are high carbon steels and both harden the same way, but 15N20 carries nickel, so acid barely touches it while it eats into the 1095. That difference is the entire reason the pattern is visible. It is structural, it goes right through the bar, and it survives sharpening. Our page on spotting a printed pattern shows what the fake version looks like by comparison.

Layer count in context

Three hundred and fifty two layers is a count of welds and folds, not a measure of quality on its own. What it tells you is how fine the banding will be once the bar is drawn down to blade thickness. On a blade this short the bands sit very close together, which is why the pattern reads as dense rather than bold. The full explanation is in our note on 352 layers.

Honest limits

A 1.5 inch edge and a two inch handle put a hard ceiling on what this knife can do. It is a companion to a bigger knife, not a replacement for one, and the smaller pivot needs cleaning more often than a full-size folder does. If you want the same design with darker scales, look at the black-handled version.

Care: Because both steels in the blade are plain carbon, the whole blade will spot if it is stored damp. Dry it, then oil it thinly — a drop rubbed over with a fingertip is enough for a blade this size. Give the pivot a drop as well. The brass file-work on the spine holds water, so finish with the corner of a dry cloth pulled along the grooves.

FAQs

How thick is the blade? Thin, in proportion to its length. It is ground for slicing rather than prying, and it will chip if you twist it.

Is the handle material stabilized? It is sealed and does not absorb water. Wash it with soap and water and keep abrasives away from the surface.

Can I carry it on a keyring? Yes. There is a lanyard hole at the butt, and at two ounces it will not weigh a set of keys down.
