What the belly does

A skinning blade is judged by its curve. The long arc from ricasso to tip means you cut with the middle of the edge instead of the point, and the point stays out of the way rather than nicking through hide. On a deer that saves the ruined patches that come from working a straight edge at the wrong angle. Push it into a job it is not shaped for, like carving a tent stake or opening a crate, and the same curve makes it awkward. That is the trade you are making.

Built for: hunters who process their own game. Deer and hogs mainly, plus the detail work around the shoulders where a longer blade cannot reach.

Weight and grip when things are wet

At the weight listed above on a four and a bit inch handle, the balance sits near your index finger. That matters more than the total figure, because you can steer the tip with small movements instead of swinging the whole knife. A short handle is a genuine limitation for large hands in gloves, so if you dress game in cold weather, measure the handle length against your own grip before ordering. The skinning knife guide covers handle sizing in more detail.

In the field and afterwards

Care: blood is the enemy here, not water. It is mildly acidic and will etch high-carbon steel overnight if you leave it sitting, so rinse and dry the knife in the field before it goes back in the sheath, then clean it properly at home. Oil the blade before storage and keep it out of the leather long term, because vegetable-tanned hide draws moisture and holds it against steel. Sharpen with a rolling wrist so you follow the curve. Sharpening a belly flat is how a skinner ends up with a straight edge and no arc left in it.

Would a gut hook serve you better?

If most of your cutting is the opening rather than the skinning that follows, yes. A Damascus gut hook knife makes that first cut without risking the paunch, and plenty of hunters carry both. The Damascus hunting knife guide sets out how the shapes divide the work.

FAQs

Is this blade long enough for a whole deer? Comfortably. Anything longer starts working against you inside the carcass.

How often will it need sharpening? Hide dulls a blade faster than wood. Expect to touch it up once during a full animal.

Hi Mark. The blade and the craftsmanship that went into it are a 5. The metal work is beautiful. Thank you.

The wooden handle, especially on one side, is rough and appears to me as if it is going to splinter. I will send a photo to Mark@blackmambaknives.com so you can see what I see.

If the handle is typical/normal, how should my son and I smooth it out without ruining the finish and/or color? Please let us know.

Thank you for your service especially the time you spent in Vietnam.
