What that much blade actually does
Length buys you three things: reach, leverage and momentum. You can clear saplings and briar with a wrist snap instead of a swing. You can split a wrist-thick piece of firewood by driving the spine through with a stick. You can take a slice off a hanging roast in one draw because the edge never has to stop and restart. None of that is available to a four-inch hunter, whatever else it does better.
On the trail and around camp: brush clearing, firewood, rough butchery, and the long list of camp jobs that a hatchet does badly and a folder cannot do at all. It also sits well on a wall, which is a legitimate reason to own one.
Where it is the wrong tool
Detail work. Caping a head, boning out a shoulder, whittling a tent peg, anything where you want the point within an inch of your thumb. The mass that makes it good at chopping makes it clumsy at that, and the tip is a long way from your hand. Nobody should own only this. Pair it with something in the four to five inch range for the fine end of the same trip.
Looking after it: the walnut is the part most people neglect. A big handle sees a lot of sweat, and salt dries wood out from the inside. Once or twice a year, put a little boiled linseed or a hardwax oil on it, let it sit, wipe off what did not soak in. The blade is high-carbon and will grey over. Keep it dry, oil the flats before it goes away for a season, and pay attention to the Damascus bolster where it meets the wood, because that seam traps water. A blade this long belongs on a rack or in a drawer rather than sealed in leather. There is more on that in how to store knives properly.
Before you order
Is this a bowie? The profile is the classic bowie shape: clipped point, deep belly, full-length tang. It is longer than most.
Too big for hunting? For dressing an animal, yes, honestly. For the camp side of a hunting trip, no. If you want the same style at a size you can carry all day, look at the twelve-inch Dragon Damascus bowie.
How do I sharpen something this long? A long stone, or a strop laid flat on a bench, and patience. Reference the guide to blade shapes if you are unsure which part of the edge does which job.

I ordered this Sequoia Bowie Knife for my husband as a Christmas gift, the knife arrived today and it is absolutely beautiful! The craftsmanship of the knife itself is superbly excellent and the knife has a gorgeous wood handle with a pleasing smooth finish. I couldn’t be happier with my purchase! This is the second knife I have ordered from Black Mamba Knives, the first one was a birthday gift for my husband, the Frilled Shark. He was so happy with the Frilled Shark that he wanted the Sequoia and I already gave it to him early and he is just so thrilled to have this fine, well made piece. Both knives are on display on his desk and they are just outstanding! Thank you Mark and Black Mamba Knives!
