Reading the pattern
A feather comes from splitting a billet and folding it back on itself, so the figure runs out from a central spine like a quill. Raindrop is drilled or punched and then flattened, which pulls the layers into concentric rings. Ladder is cut in straight grooves across the bar. Getting all three onto one small blade means the grinder has to stop at exactly the right depth in three different places, because a tenth of a millimeter too far and a figure disappears. If pattern is the reason you are here, how the patterns are made is worth ten minutes.
Everyday role: a dress folder for a pocket that already has a phone and keys in it. Three inches of blade, just under six ounces, opened with a gold-plated thumb stud. It cuts tape, string, fruit and paper without complaint and looks like something when you set it on a table.
Wood next to metal
Any wooden handle darkens where hands touch it, and it darkens unevenly, because the oil from your palm lands on the middle of the scale and not on the ends. Give it two years and this handle will be a shade or two deeper than it is in the photograph, deepest under the fingers. The metal alongside it does the opposite and stays exactly as it is, so the contrast between wood and hardware widens rather than settles. Nothing is wrong when that happens; it is the normal life of a wood-scaled folder.
Maintenance: fold this away damp and the flats will freckle, so dry them and run a light oil across the blade now and then. The wood scales want a wipe with a barely oiled cloth once or twice a year and nothing more; a soaked handle swells against its pins. The plated thumb stud must never see abrasive polish; plating is measured in microns and polish removes it. Keep the stone out of hard knocks. Do not wash any of it in a sink.
Questions that come up
Does the pattern go all the way through? Yes. It is the interface between two different steels, so it is structural, not applied. Sharpening cuts into fresh pattern.
Will it hold an edge like a modern super steel? Not as long. It gets sharper more easily and it takes a finer edge, which is the trade most people making this choice actually want.
