Right for: a first serious balisong. It is the one most people in this catalog end up with, and the reason is unglamorous. The brass and wood pairing forgives clumsy hands, and nothing on it is expensive enough to make you nervous about a drop.
Why kamagong polishes rather than scratches
Kamagong carries silica in its cell walls, which is why it blunts tooling on the bench and why it behaves unusually well on a handle. A scuff that would show as a white line on a softer timber burnishes out under a thumb. Over a few hundred hours the insert picks up a low sheen that no finish put there. It is the closest thing to a self-maintaining wood we work with.
The bolsters do the real work
Brass sits at the ends of the handles, which is where a balisong actually takes damage. Every missed catch lands on a bolster corner rather than on wood or on the pivot. Brass is soft enough to deform instead of cracking, so it collects small flats and dings and passes almost none of that shock inward. Look at a ten-year-old example and the bolsters will be rounded while the inserts are untouched. Balisong construction explained walks through the rest of the assembly.
Handle longer than blade
4.7 inches of handle over a 4.4 inch blade sounds trivial and is not. That extra quarter inch is clearance, and clearance is what stops the edge kissing the inside of the channel every time you close it fast. It is also why this pattern tolerates being learned on.
Care: the 1095 in the billet is the part that rusts, so dry the blade and leave a trace of oil on it. The brass wants polish two or three times a year if you like it bright, and nothing at all if you do not. The kamagong wants nothing ever. Resist the urge to oil the wood hoping to darken it, because it will not absorb any and the surface stays tacky for weeks.
FAQs
Is this a sensible size to learn on? It is the standard size at 9.1 inches open, which is what most tutorials assume.
What else is close to it? The rose wood and steel bolster D2 swaps the billet for a tool steel and the brass for stainless. The stag handled Damascus balisong keeps the blade and drops the wood for antler.
Does the brass need sealing? No. Tarnish on brass is a surface film, not corrosion into the metal, and it does nothing but change the color.

Thank you BMK! I love my new balisong! It’s well made, robust and very sharp! Honestly I’m not used to a double sided blade so getting used to flipping and twirling it around will take more practice! I’ll be shopping at your store again soon! Stay healthy and safe!
